CAYO INLAND EXPEDITION
This was one of the most amazing excursions we've ever done. Although we had a very long day, it was worth it. Special shout out to Wayne, our driver. He was punctual with great energy bright and early in the morning. He had food ready for us when we were back from that tour. Felt safe in the car with him all day long and he was just great company overall. Hector, our guide for the actual tour, was wonderful also giving a lot of stories and entertaining us throughout the trip.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Tour lasts about 4-5 hrs. You will be wet essentially the entire time so plan to dress accordingly. This company does require you to wear a life jacket the entire. The initial hike to get to the cave is about an hour long. You swim across the river in the first 15 minutes. Then you walk across the river a couple more times at knee height water.
Once you get to the cave, you swim across to enter the cave. And the first 1.5-2 hours of being in the cave is ALL in water - swimming, ankle height, knee height, waist height. Bouldering 3-5 foot boulders. We felt safe the entire time because Hector told us exactly where to step and where to avoid danger, etc.
Then you boulder up about 20-30 feet to get into the dry chamber where you spend about 45 min-1 hr seeing all the artifacts.
Then 1 hr going back out the same way that you came in.
Lunch was waiting for us when we came back.
WHAT TO WEAR:
Swim shorts and a light t shirt are ideal.
Water shoes with decent soles would be ideal to hike on land + climb over rocks. We saw a lot of people in tennis shoes.
