Mini bus pickup from City to Hillary’s harbour. Excellent diesel train trip to Oliver Hill gun emplacements with full tour of the amazing wartime facility. Lunch supplied then bus trip around the island with full commentary on all the sights and history. Saw a rare Osprey with nest, dugite snakes sunning themselves, friendly lizards, whales and of course the little quokkas. These were common around the commercial area near the harbour!

We opted to book the Grand Island Tour which is operated by Australian Pinnacle Tours, the cost of the tour was $99 per adult. This cost is for the Island Tour; the cost of ferry transfer to/from Rottnest Island is additional.

After arriving at the Island and disembarking from the ferry it is about a 5-10 minute walk, depending on how quickly you walk, to the train station for the first leg of the tour. The first leg involves a train ride to Oliver's Hill. Unfortunately on the day of our tour the train was out of service due to mechanical issues. In lieu of the train, transport to Oliver's Hill was provided by coach. Whilst less atmospheric than the train, it served the purpose (the day was lovely and sunny and wind-free; on a windy day, the coach would provide more protection from the elements).

At Oliver's Hill is an old armament, including a tunnel. Volunteer guides take people on a tour, this is in two parts. One part involves descending to the tunnel, there are multiple steps and it can be quite steep. For those who feel uncomfortable with the steps, it is possible to wait and sit out this part of the tour. The second part of the tour does not involve steps, so is fine.

Lunch was served at Oliver's Hill. This included three options, chicken wrap, falafel wrap or salad (the gluten-free option). The wraps whilst fairly basic were fresh and tasty, multiple group members were heard complimenting the quality. Bottles of drinking water were provided. The weather was well-suited to a picnic lunch - there are picnic tables. However, the exposed site means that it could be windy, so would recommend bringing jackets and sunscreen.

Following the picnic lunch there is a tour that pretty much covers the circumference of the Island. Our coach driver was passionate about Rottnest and has been visiting for many years. He provided fabulous insights into the history of the Island and his own experiences. Various stops are made to take photographs, etc.

The tour concludes about 5 minutes walk from the ferry terminal for those who are catching ferries back to Perth/Fremantle.

This tour is recommended both as a way of providing an overview of the Island and for those who may not want to cycle around. The Grand Tour also means that there is no need to wait for the next hop-on/hop-off bus.

This is a really fun trip to do and it's marginally cheaper than booking the ferry and the bus trip on Rottnest Island separately on their own. Although do note that a) the bus trip doesn't let you off anywhere. If you want that option, get the hop on, hop off bus. On this bus tour though you do get some excellent commentary, and b) once the bus tour is done after about 1 3/4 - 2 hours, you're left to your own devices.

Absolutely beautiful views along the coast of island.
Was great to hop on and off the bus , you need to ask or press button for bus to stop.
We asked guide at start which stops would be best for us to get off at and glad we did her advise was great.
Loved our day and also did lots of walking at stops and between some short distance stops. 5/7.

We spent a day with Pete in Perth and the surrounding area Fremantle etc was a fantastic day. Pete took us to places that we would never have found by ourselves. Pete an easy going guy who wants to make sure that you enjoy the day as much as possible. When we come back to Perth will definitely give him a call

Our guide, Peter, was amazing. It is obvious that he is passionate with what he does. He brought us through the hill trails with a lot of care and concern as it was raining. We were brought through many points to and from the hills, where we learnt about the rich history and heritage of Perth. It was convenient and comfortable. Thanks mate!

Being interested in history this was a must for me. The train was not running so a bus replaced it; no issue really. We done the tour with Ian, it was very enlightening and comprehensive. You get to explore the full complex!

The bus tour was great as it took us to all the main places on the island. Our bus driver was amazing and had so much knowledge, it was very informative. Well worth the money.
