Art Galleries
One of the most romatic modern art museums in Europe- the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum- is located less than 20 km south of Bratislava. It was founded by the Dutch collector and patron of the arts Gerard Meulensteen and the Slovak gallerist Vincent Polakovič. Since its opening in 2000, the museum has arranged numerous exhibitions of leading figures of the Slovak, European and world art scene, including Karel Appel, Sam Francis, Miroslav Cipár, Markus Prachensky, Ilona Keserü Ilona, Rudolf Sikora, Martín Chirino, Vladimír Popovič and other artists. The museum has attracted thousands of Slovak and foreign visitors as well as royal visits and leading political, social and above all cultural figures. Its unique location bordering on three countries, and sensitive integration with the surrounding nature and the River Danube provide visitors extraordinary views of exhibited artworks and of the flora and fauna unique to the peninsula of art in every season of the year. The adjoining sculpture park features the Works of a number of artists, among them El Lissitzky, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Jim Dine, Hans van de Bovenkamp, Jozef Jankovič, Arman, Jean- Claude Farhi, Vladimír Kompánek and Rudolf Uher. A magnificent view of Bratislava and the mighty Danube offer unforgettable experiences at sunset. After the completion of the extension, supported by the Government of the Slovak Republic, the museum is a new symbol of modern Bratislava, recommended by prestigious world guide books and social networking websites. See you by the River Danube, friends!

We took a Bolt taxi from the centre and it took just 20 mins and less than €10 to get there. The castle is in ruins but is set on a mountain top at the confluence of Danube and Morava rivers. On the other side is Austria and so this castle is quite literally on the border.

The extended circuit takes you round the castle and leads to up the middle castle and upper castle. There are about 150 steps leading up to the upper castle from where you can see the rivers and into Austria. There is this really deep well in the middle castle which you can look into.

We spent more than an hour over here wandering around the ruins and then took a taxi back.

Did not realize that this small statue had a name, but did learn the story behind it on our tour. Many of the streets had interesting markers and manhole covers, but this beats them all.

Great museum with a very interesting permanent exhibition. Parts of the walls are glass, so you can see the river from inside the building. Both indoors and outdoors exhibitions are lovely. Easy parking, very nice cafe. When sunny, enjoy a coffee break outside. You should spend at least one and a half hour to see the whole exhibition.

Cute church, interesting style. I'm glad we didn't force ourselves to get up at 6am to see the inside, since during it's non-working hours, you can still go in through first doors and see the inside through the glassed second doors

We took the trip up via taxi (and back down by foot). The memorial itself is beautifully done and is very nice to walk around whilst taking in history - or paying respects.

To couple with the history around, the views over the city are equally amazing so well worth the trip.

After spending the day in Bratislava, we decided to go up to the castle to kill time as it is open until 10pm.

It is a beautiful location with an unreal view of the city, especially at night.

Unfortunately the museum wasn't open on a Tuesday, and we arrived too late to view the gardens.

However undoubtably both would have been beautiful experiences that hopefully we can one day enjoy.

Well worth visiting the ufo tower. Good views over the old city and the river Danube.
The lift up is just a short ride and then up a few steps to the viewing platform.
I had a beer in the cafe/ restaurant which was nice to warm up inside and relax overlooking the city.

As you walk around in the streets of the old town you will gaze upon this tower frequently. It is possible to go up and get a view of the old town.

Makes for some really pretty pictures.

Nice small square with some beautiful buildings and a few small shops. Really busy hub of activity. Few benches to sit on to just sit and watch all that is going on.

Tower Michaels gate is the only tower of the old city walls that is left. It is at the end of St Michaels street. It used to sit over a moat surrounding the old city in the 1300's. It is a must see if the old city as its one of the oldest buildings in town.
