Lovely short walk (with option to extend) by the river and falls. Can swim at the top if not at the bottom. PIcnic tables by the car park and toilets/ changing rooms. Lovely stop if travelling along SH1.

You could see just as much if not more snorkelling than diving. Great experience and can recommend Dive! Tutakaka.

Straight up, one of the best experiences in Aotearoa.
Went on a whim having passed through Whangārei & it turned out to be a day of eclectic art, ecological innovation and architectural visionary.

Lived in Whangarei 7years, but first visit, surprised at sea mammals skeletel display in museum, , living bugs in glass display cases and wonderful kiwi house, with 3pm feeding so go a bit earlier to allow eyes to acclimatise to dark.great shop selections too.
Short walk over ridgebto all the rides; ride on train, conventional train carriage, hay cart rise and tram rides all on 3rd Sunday each month and very reasonable charges.
With this 2.5 hrs from Auckland, I think it is very under rated in National promotions.

We were told this is a must visit by a local and it was indeed such an amazing place. The gardens are beautiful, its a really easy walk and we had lunch in the cafe which was also really nice. I would recommend even if you arent a plant lover.

Beautiful pristine beach. Great sand for modelling and sandcastles. great waves for young and older swimmers. wonderful for long walks. Well patrolled by surf line guard team. Right on the edge of a wildlife sanctuary for special New Zealand birds.

Hiked the famous Mt Mainia on a rather cloudy day, so no good views. Still a very nice, but strenuous hike - a lot of stairs and some uphill. But beautiful through native forest.
And with a view it must be even better!!!

Relaxing. Lots to do and see. Or you can just walk along the promade and enjoy. The ball bearing clocks is a classic bit of engineering and you could watch this for hours.
