I really enjoyed the story told through the museum of Iceland from settlement to the modern period, with it divided up into distinct ages. It feels like a good overview of the past 1000ish years with plenty of detail to dive into. Staff were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We spent about two and a half hours there and saw most of it, which felt about the right amount of time as part of the city card, I don’t think I’d want to rush through much quicker.

I didn’t make it inside, but loved all the statues outside, lightly dusted in snow, which was free. Right across from Hallgrimskirkja church.

The museum itself and its surroundings were created and projected by the artist Ásmundar Sveinsson as a place where his legacy could be exhibited. In the park, his sculptures are exhibited and they can be viewed free of charge. Indoors, there is a changing exhibition, as well as many of the same sculptors yet on a much smaller scale so they could be viewed from a different perspective.

I liked the collection, and how different elements of the earth (e.g., air, water) were divided according to floors. There are surprisingly many spaces with activities meant for children. However, the museum itself (while located in a very nice building) seems a bit forgotten, as if the 'new' museums in Reykjavik would have taken some concepts once densely combined in the Culture House, and extended them to make the visitor experience more comprehensive. By and large, it is worth a visit if you want to get a general understanding of the cultural life, values, and understanding of Icelanders.

An interesting exhibition, with leaflets explaining each piece in detail. Quiet, even on a Sunday. Really interesting building / space. The immersive exhibits were incredible. Welcoming staff. Would have been nice to have more postcards etc from the current exhibition in the shop.

First I’ll say not a big fan of modern art, but love classical pieces. Museum had at least one interactive piece on every floor and activities for children. My favorite piece was one of women washing clothes in a hot spring.

This is right by the Þúfa (grass mound/hill), so you can check out both at once. And both are free.

The art museum is not big, only occupying a portion of the building pictured. I found it entertaining enough.

There is an adjoining restaurant that looked both trendy and busy - so you could do that as well. Or you can go to the cheaper food hall not too far from here (you pass along the way).

The museum consists of a lobby, 2 exhibit rooms, a small cafe and sculpture on the grounds.
The art goes is more on the non-objective side. It has pleasing relaxing quality.
We enjoyed the art but not nearly as much as the Ásmundur Sveinsson or Einar Jonsson museums. That being said we're glad we went and would have felt we missed some of the great art iceland has to offer
The grounds have a great view to sea. Good for an hour.

I was walking through the area and decided to stop in for a quick visit as the ticket I purchased for the National Gallery allows free entrance here. The house is small and is really 3 rooms. The painter left hundreds of painting to the country of Iceland and they are on display in several museums. The theme of the paintings in the home related to trolls. Great way to spend 30 minutes if you have the free entrance ticket.

Surreal and bonkers, the Chromo Sapiens installation kept us and our children happy for a long time. Think Honey Monster meets Fraggles in a womb-like space. Great cafe, green space, and some children’s toys too. Definitely worth a visit.
