- EricBrowntown, VA150 contributionsMy wife and I stopped here on our recent trip to Reykjavik. We really enjoyed our stop. The frozen drinks and decor was great. I wouldn't recommend ordering a drink that is canned or bottled as you have to drink them fast bc they with freeze quickly. Place is small with little seating but it wasn't busy when we were there. All said it was still a must see for us.Written October 28, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Mary GPensacola, FL123 contributionsFirst I’ll say not a big fan of modern art, but love classical pieces. Museum had at least one interactive piece on every floor and activities for children. My favorite piece was one of women washing clothes in a hot spring.Written September 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas KCopenhagen, Denmark1,380 contributionsArt Gallery run by local artist- the open early and close later than many others. You can meet the artists in the shop, they take turn tending to the Gallery and helping customers. Always 1 artist to help you.
At the end of the street you see the beautiful huge Hallsgrim Church. Many good shops and cafés on the same streetWritten July 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Mengi provides an atmosphere you could expect at some of the most exclusive venues in New York City, combined with accessibility to some of Iceland’s greatest talents both new and old. 10/10 would recommend an evening at one of Mengi’s events.Written April 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Percy W3 contributionsJon Samunder and the Dead Gallery is a trip. His gallery is stuffed with paintings currently in preparation for a show opening on Sept. 24th in town. While his long term focus seems to be skulls, portraits and complex-patterned paintings of faces/shapes/symbols and ritualistic figures, he is also making some beautiful images of the recent volcano, plants and flowers. He is gifted and I think very worth collecting. I purchased 2 of his volcano paintings - roughly 24x24 for under $1000. A number of the larger pieces were very impressive and will find good homes, I am sure. When we found the gallery, down a side alley off one of the main walking streets in old town, there was tape across the open front doorway. I had to knock and yell before he appeared out of a fabulously packed working art studio space. He said he was closed, too busy working on his upcoming show. I ignored his response and began pointing to paintings that I thought were interesting from the outside doorway view. He responded by spending 45 minutes talking art and looking at a wide array of his work. Jon is much more than a skull ring and t-shirt artist. He has a vision of reality that is extremely outsider, but with the skills to produce well composed and original images. It was a trip meeting Jon and I am happy to have his work hanging in my Chicago condo.Written September 7, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Nancy B44 contributionsWhile browsing on Rainbow Street in Reykjavik we were delighted to discover Gallery Grasteinn. It is an artists collective where eight (or so) local artists display their work and take turns staffing the store. There are paintings, jewelry, ceramics, carvings, and other decorative works. This gallery provides an opportunity to take home a souvenir that is unique and even to have met the artist who made it. Although there are definitely some expensive works, many of the items are priced within the range of mass produced items available in souvenir shops.Written September 27, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mark N69 contributionsWe visited this gallery twice as it was the most interesting of the selling galleries in the city, with a wide variety of canvases, collages, ceramics, photography and sculptures, all of which are of high quality and very well presented. The staff can't really answer questions about the works in the same way as the (also very good) art collective galleries on Laugarvegur but there is much to enjoy; many of the pieces have quirky twists that make them just a bit different. There is also a toilet facility for visitors! Prices are in the main quite high but not at all unexpected for the quality on display. Well worth a visit for lovers of modern art.Written November 4, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Emily VCollege Station, TX103 contributionsDagny is an absolutely lovely woman who has an incredible skill in pottery! My friend and I walked past her shop one night and loved what we saw through the window so we returned the next day and sat outside the shop until it opened. She had such a beautiful collection of pieces that were styled after the Icelandic landscape. I saw drawn in by the volcano pieces that you can buy in multiple sizes and colors. I personally liked the skinner volcano with plans to put flowers in it but if you buy a wider size, you can place a tea light inside and it looks like the volcano is glowing! Highly recommend stopping by, even just to chat with Dagny!Written February 28, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - melissa rLa Center, WA71 contributionsWe stopped in this gallery while strolling around town, and picked up a beautiful white porcelain espresso cup to use at home. The design is brilliant and saves your hand from getting hot. All of the items were gorgeous and I sincerely wish we'd been able to bring more home. With the dollar to krona exchange rate, it was too expensive to buy more. (This is throughout Iceland, not just here.) At any rate, we will really enjoy our little cup and think of Iceland every time we use it.Written September 24, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
