Architectural Buildings
Casa da Musica was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Musica opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Musica was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Musica also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators.

Iconic bridge with great views of Porto and Vila Nova De Gaia. Two levels to the bridge and accessible by road and path. There is a funicular at the side of it to take you up to the top of the city, but this wasn't working when we went. (Be prepared for lots of steep hills and steps!)
We wandered over the bridge a couple of times to visit the other side which is a must! There is lots to do and see over there too.

Took the train from Porto (Sai Bento station) to Pocinho, a 3.5 hour journey each way. The tracks runs along the Duoro River for a lot of the time and through the area with vineyards. The trip is well worth it. A return ticket for a pensioner was about 15 Euros. Pensioners get a large discount in Portugal so remember to take your passport to the ticket office. There is very little at Pocinho, there are a couple of places to get food and a coffee. The big boats do not operate from Porto up the Duoro River in winter (Oct - Mar), because of risk and maintenance they do not operate the numerous dams they now have on the Duoro. The train is a good alternative.

Wandered down here for a couple of afternoons, great atmosphere, bars, restaurants, buskers, cafes, shops, boat rides along the river, it's all going on here.
Sat for coffee and beer in a couple of the bars, prices are cheap and service was good. Great views over the river.

Tower and church are worth visiting particularly at sunset if you’re willing to fight the crowds. The view was spectacular !

Lovely cathedral, ornate interior with original cloister and great views. The path up is really steep and long and proved quite a challenge! Very reasonable entry charge and worth a visit.

One of the best 12 euros ever spent visiting a 'sight'. Just amazing. Interesting history and glorious architecture. In awe at the flooring and domed ceiling. The Arab room takes your breath away. Don't miss this.

A stunning church. Simply beautiful. When the sun shines inside the church, its beauty comes alive. Get a guidebook and spend time looking around the church.
The ticket also allows entry inside the museum. Do not miss visiting the museum and the catacombs.
Please note no photos are allowed to be taken in the church. Staff do walk around inside the church.

It ended up raining, so we were really glad to be seated under the overhang. Game was amazing and they gave out noisemakers and flags to the fans.

The Capela das Almas is a small church in the heart of Porto. The facade is spectacular, featuring a religious mural with blue tones. It's one of the typical views of Porto, and it's worth passing by to enjoy it.

The beauty of the church was breathtaking. One of the best parts of the visit is that one of the staff took the time to explain everything to us while we were in the church. Her narrative made a huge difference. When we went to the second level there was another staff member who was also gracious with his time and explained everything to us. If you have a chance you should visit

We actually stumbled upon this place, thinking we were visiting fresh food market, as it is actually a posh, food court/hall, which was a pleasant surprise.

The interior is stunning and very inviting, we loved just walking around taking it all in, it will be interesting to see if the other Mercado's are like this one.

We decided to eat at Daterra as it was excellent value at 10.50 for lunch, the food was tasty, and the dishes numerous, being a buffet we had our fill.

All in all a wonderful experience.

Loved the classical music performance we went to (Mozart and Wagner). The concert hall is well worth experiencing. Booking online worked well. We thought 9.30pm was a late start, but it is close to the Metro, so late finish wasn't an issue for getting back to the centre. We were disappointed the restaurant isn't operating, but the cafe is open.
