Great views of a beautiful lake and snow capped mountains behind it. A tourist town for sure, but worth walking around the lake and the marinas. We took a boat ride on the lake, but it was fairly foggy.

Along with the fun multiple modes of transportation to and from, we had dinner at Alpina Hotel and Restaurant. The fondue was delicious and so was the rest of the chicken dinner. The white wine was excellent. In addition, the entertainment was enthusiastic and engaging- just two gentlemen with an endless variety of instruments including the alpine horn. The views were spectacular. Quite a sunset.

Lucerne’s Mt Pilates is 7000 feet tall. We took the cogwheel railway up to the summit. The gradient of around 48 percent is supposedly the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. The ride took around half an hour. We passed alpine meadow, clouds, tree line, striking rock formations, then reached a rather barren summit. From various observation areas, you can see the Swiss Alps. Though Lucerne was below, the dense cloud cover prevented us seeing it. There were restaurants and souvenirs shops. The summit has the shape of a face. There are paths that take you up higher to the chin and to the nose. Unfortunately the video about Mt Pilates was closed that day. The shape of the building and the gondola station looked like it was from James Bond’s 1969 film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” However looking it up on the internet indicates that this wasn’t the mountain.

The Chapel Bridge of Lucerne was started around 1365 spanning the Reuss River, as part of Lucerne’s fortifications. It is a charming impressive wooden bridge with many paintings about Swiss history located up in the roof supports. Part of the Chapel bridge caught fire and was rebuilt. It is an easy walk on the bridge which takes you toward Schwanenplatz, near the old town. The central railway station is short walk on the opposite side of the river.

Why visit this town if you don't walk the Old Town. It is full of great churches, shops, very old historical buildings and restaurants/cafes. Lots of alleys and streets to get lost on with many fountains.

The Lion Monument is an anti-revolutionary monument to commemorate the dramatic events in Paris on August 10, 1792, when an angry hoard stormed the Tuileries Palace and killed hundreds of Swiss Guardsmen serving King Louis XVI during the French Revolution. The dying lion was sculpted into the cliff and unveiled in 1821.

The mirror maze, the lion monument and the immersive museum experiences were the best among other things in the garden. The tickets are included in the Swiss Pass and it takes about an hour or so to see the entire place.

This is more than a transport museum, it covers associated engineering as well.

Trains, planes, satellites, helicopters, cars, some boats and even play roadworks.

This is a must for boys and girls of all ages, with lots of hands on exhibits, most of which worked. Not sure we could take it all in within one visit. It would be better to allow free re-entry within a few days.

That being said, although expensive, it was enlightening and enjoyable. It’s so nice not being bothered by unruly British children. This Swiss are so well behaved, much as British children were 50 years ago.

This museum was covered by our Swiss Travel Pass and is a nicely curated collection of modern art. While Picasso's art is not necessarily my favorite the Rosengarts had a personal relationship with him and it was fascinating to watch the video and see the pieces they chose to collect of his works. Of partiular note were the photographs of David Douglas Duncan which documented the last 17 years of Picasso's life. There are three floors and works including Klee, Renoir, Chagall, Cesanne, and Matisse.

What a beautiful venue! We were lucky to be able to see a brass and woodwinds orchestra perform some works with Organ and Piano. The staff were helpful in locating our seats for us and I was very grateful that someone spoke enough English to clarify things when another patron insisted we were in their seats! The concert was fabulous, so glad we got the opportunity to see a live performance here.

The other covered bridge in town, just down the canal from the other. Similarly adorned with artwork as the Chapel Bridge. Cross over one then the other and see a lot of the buildings on the canal.

Spent half a day in Lucerne, so glad we wandered up to check this out. A lot of stairs but the views from the top were amazing. Nice to find something that was free to enjoy.
