The Basilica of Candelaria was the first church in the Canaries dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A sacred relic is kept upstairs, above the altar - a wooden figure of the Black Madonna. The original statue was washed up into a cave where two shepherds used to put their livestock at the end of the day. It is a very interesting history and worth reading. The Virgin of Candelaria was officially declared Patroness of the Canary Islands in 1867 and canonically crowned in 1889.

The Basilica itself is the work of architect Enrique Marrero Regalado and was built in 1959. Its central tower is 45 meters high and is decorated with a magnificent Canarian balcony.

An attractive Church in the centre of Puerto, with a pleasant little square at the rear.
Unable to look round inside other than s quick peep, as there was a Sunday service taking place.

Also known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Founded in 1511 and declared a site of cultural interest and is the home of a number of brotherhoods with much history. To visit inside, there is a small fee to pay. Worth a visit if in the area.

A relatively easy 20 minute walk from the cruise ship terminal and, wow, well worth the effort. One of the most wonderful religious buildings I've ever entered. Absolutely beautiful is really an understatement. Truly magnificent both inside and out. Free to enter but donations activity encouraged. Really a religious delight. Loved the atmospheric background music as well.

At the time the building construction, the capital of the island was the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which is why this Cathedral is located here and not at Santa Cruze. The Roman Catholic church now listed as a World Heritage Site which began construction in 1904. However, the The Neoclassical front dates back to 1820 and before then, other structures were erected on the site, so it has lots of past history.

This was one of two convents that we got to see on our tour of La Laguna, although we did not get to go inside of either of them given timing (we did though see one of the few remaining nuns who live there emerge as we passed).
The attraction for me was to see the beautiful wooden 'viewing room' perched at the top, from which the nuns apparently could safely observe the world outside without being seen back!

Visited by chance on a rainy day after viewing the Dragon Tree from the plaza on which this church stands. Little museum, not as good as the one in La Orotava, but still worth the 2euro fee. Church itself is beautiful.

Beautiful old church, ornate and opulent. It is definitely worth popping into for a while to enjoy the shade and ghosts of ancient worshippers.

This cave Church is just at the back of the big dominant Basilica on the main sq to the right. It's in fact the older one, carved in rock and later covered in rather simple island style house with Arabic style wooden ceiling.
The interior is austere with a black Madonna replica down at the end in the rock.
Beside it, there's another small rock sanctuary at the end of the seaside promenade under a huge rock. Perfect vistas from that point.
TIP: as the main Plaza is usually full with parking, here you'll find parking space.

Lovely small church in gigantes. In the main square as you head down to the marina. Went inside for a look around and found it to be very pretty.

In 1836 was placed a cross that gives name to this place, to flag the walkers that passed by this crossroad. Where the cross was, a small chapel was built, Ermita de la Cruz del Carmen.
