- Kevin M60 contributionsThere's a lot of history in this abbey. Try and go on a sunny day to get the best views. Love the gargoyles. They sometimes have concerts on here. You get the odd free day too. It must have been impressive before the damage done over time. The Irish chieftains defeated the English in the Curlew mountains and the survivors took refuge here. My name is Mulrennan and a Mulrennan was a chief abbot in medieval times. Combine with a nice walk round the back of st Joseph's and abbey town.Written July 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MuftybStanwix, UK94 contributionsWe arrived in our motorhome, the car park is quite small, we asked the staff and they told us where we could park.
Before we went to look at the famine museum, we had lunch in the cafe. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We both had a vegan sausage roll with tomato relish. Highly recommended. We followed it up with a cherry scone and a chocolate brownie, all very good. Washed down with good coffee!
We then went to look at the museum. It was very interesting and informative. Definitely not to be rushed.
We didn’t do the tour of the house as we needed to get back to the dogs! We gave them a walk and headed off.

A beautifully maintained historic building that represents three centuries of history of Ireland and the aristocracy that ruled it and the King families in its role.
Thomas Waldron was our guide and he was extremely impressive in the way he outlined the history of the building and significance of various collection that is on display.
It also has a section of gifts to President Mary McEllese and a surprising collection of internationally famed jeweller and the story of Erwin Springbrunn who lived in the area.
