- Paddie BBelfast, UK2 contributionsOne of the best things I did this year was to find John and sea kayaking sessions leaving from Whiterock, Killinchy. Well set up service - just turned up and joined the various groups exploring parts of Strangford Lough and islands, enjoying the wild life and the beauty of the environment. Always good fun it was also so therapeutic - Monday night was wonderful - went on abut five sessions. - Katrina M1 contributionI have had the pleasure of working with Marty as our outdoor pursuits leader a number of times over the past 3 years, and I can’t speak highly enough of his impact on individuals. Marty possesses a rare talent for connecting with children and young people, building a natural rapport that puts everyone at ease. It didn’t matter if a child was shy, adventurous, or somewhere in between—Marty's energy and warmth helped each one relax and engage fully.
Marty’s enthusiasm for the outdoors is infectious, but it’s his sensitivity to individual needs that really sets him apart. He has an uncanny ability to read each participant's comfort level, gently encouraging them to step outside their comfort zone while always making sure they feel safe and supported. The way he adjusts his approach for each personality—whether it's through a shared laugh, a quiet word of encouragement, or a confident show of support—helps children and teens build confidence, develop teamwork, and take pride in their accomplishments.
His activities are thoughtfully planned, with just the right balance of challenge and fun. The latest of which was to the Lagan sports centre. The girls from our youngest 6 to our oldest 56 went zorbing on the Lagan, a speedboat journey to the zorb and bell boating. The instructors on the night consisted of Dave, Jack and Mark and they were fantastic with each child no matter their ability. They even went above and beyond and got drums because some of the older girls remembered dragon boating up the Lagan.
