I’m a fairly frequent theatregoer, and while I enjoy going to the two main established theatres in Belfast - the Lyric and the Grand Opera House - some of the best plays I’ve EVER seen have been in the last year at two small theatres in Belfast: the Southbank Theatre on Kimberly Drive, and Bright Umbrella’s Sanctuary Theatre on Castlereagh Street.

While the three excellent plays I’ve seen at the Southbank Theatre have all been superbly acted plays by renowned established playwrights (The Weir by Conor McPherson, Sive by JB Keane, Table Manners by Alan Ayckbourn), some of the excellent plays I’ve seen at Bright Umbrella’s Sanctuary Theatre have been wonderfully original plays by local Northern Ireland writers, such as the laugh-out-loud satirical comedy, ‘The Wife And Me...And My Sex Doll Ruby’ (which is much more profound than the title may suggest!) by Mark Kavanagh, and the fantastic ‘One Saturday Before The War’, co-written and directed by Bright Umbrella’s Artistic Director, Trevor Gill, based on a book by a local historian, Sam Robinson.

‘One Saturday Before The War’ is the type of theatre I love, delightfully creative, and thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish, very theatrical, brilliantly written, brilliantly directed, brilliantly performed. After seeing it for the first time a few weeks ago, I thought it was so good that I went to see it again four days later, just before all the tickets for all the performances were sold out, and I’d go to it again, and bring others with me, if it ever returns for a third run.

But it’s not just the excellence of the plays which makes a visit to the Sanctuary Theatre always worthwhile, it’s the friendliness of the aptly named place, where you’ll meet people who have great enthusiasm for theatre and entertainment, down-to-earth, naturally friendly, good humoured and interested in other people’s points of view and experiences.

Have been coming here on and off for a good few years, most of the time its quite good if enot even better. Colin Murphy is my favourite host and I'd come to watch him alone. Sorry that sounded a bit creepy! But hes really good. They have some great acts on too be it local or visiting from Dublin or England. The best thing to do in Belfast on a Tuesday night for sure though

I am impressed with what I learned, with the number of laughs I gave, the crazy scenes that were created in the moment and the evolution that I see in my colleagues which became my good friends very fast. This school makes us think, makes us question, is not only a way to get better in improv/theatre but also in life. I discovered a big treasure in this lovely city of Belfast.
