Walked the trail on 10 November, 2019 during the above which happens in November every year and it was lovely. It was free and no registration was required. I would recommend to start from Dali as its easier to find the entrance to the trail just behind the temple which is a short 5mins walk from Dali train station. Lots of signages in english. Take the longer and more gradual road up instead of the steeper stairs if not super fit. Trail had wonderful views of the coastal areas & the silver grass was everywhere. Took about 1.5hr at a slow pace to reach the top before another hour downhill to Fulong.I took the local train from Taipei Main Station to Dali (about 2hrs, NTD94) & from Fulong back to TMS (1.5hrs, NTD83). I used Easycard for the train rides. Local trains function like the mrt ie. no reserve seating & no need to book in advance. Just tap on/off at the platforms.

Longdong Bay Cape Trail (龍洞灣岬步道, Longdongwan Cape Trail) is located in Gongliao District of New Taipei City. It is one of the attractions on the northeast coast of Taiwan. It is 49 km (30.4 mi) from Taipei Railroad Station and takes about an hour by car. The Longdong Bay Cape Trail is a scenic trail that connects two largest capes on the northeast coastline - Bitou Cape and Longdong Bay Cape. This trail also links these two different geological eras, one took place six million years ago and the other 35 million years ago. The origin of the name Longdong (dragon’s cave) came from the shape of the coastline. It looks like the shape of a dragon lying down. Along the coastline are a series of hard, steep rising sandstone formations.

We went to Longdong Bay Cape Trail twice and really enjoyed the scenery of the cliffs and the vast East China Sea and Pacific Ocean along the trail. It is a 3-km (1.86 mi) trail. We started our hike from the Longdongwan side near the Hemei Elementary School. There is a parking lot on a small branch line off the No. 2 province road. From the parking lot, there is a short uphill path before you are right on the Longdong Bay Cape Trail and can see the sea. I recommend a side path on the left we took just before we could see the sea. The beginning of the path was a forest tunnel and was a wonderful place to avoid the sun and heat, especially in the summer. There was a flat field once we left the tunnel. Make sure you go to the far end, and you can see a small observation platform which gives you an incredible view of the cliff along the coastline. We also saw some crazy young people jumping from the rocks and diving into ocean below from a distance. Back on the main trail, we saw wayside pavilion where we could take a rest and enjoy the different views of the coastline and cliffs. If you are geology lover, you will notice the rich and diverse geological views along the trail. We saw the Xilingyan Temple while approaching the end of the trail. The original temple was built during Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty. The present building is a reconstruction. The final trail is the 97 steps down to the Longdong South Ocean Park.

Longdong area is divided by the Longdong Tunnel into two areas, the Longdongwan Park and the Longdong South Ocean Park. Nearby is the Longdong Rock Climbing Site which is located in the Longdong Cape near the Hemei Elementary School. It is the most popular natural rock-climbing site in Taiwan. The trail opens all year long and is free to visit. Rogue waves are likely to take place during northeast monsoon months (October – March). To ensure your own safety, please do not carry out any leisure activity near the shores.

Parking was super easy. We paid $100 to park our car all day. It is a short walk to the beach entrance. There is an entry fee of $100 per person but it is worth it because it includes free use of umbrellas along the beach, fresh water showers and good bathrooms. After you pay to get in you walk over a bridge to get to the beach front. There were 2 lifeguards on duty the entire time we were there. You can rent lockers, hair dryers, surf boards and boogie boards if you want. If you go back across the bridge (close to the hotel) you can buy drinks/snacks.

The water was warm and the beach was very clean. We really enjoyed our day here.

There were quite a few long boarders and paddle boarders riding the small waves. This would be a good place to learn how to surf because the waves a small and they break slowly.

Regardless of your view of world religions or if you are atheistic in your beliefs you MUST come and see this place. It sits high up on a mountain and offers stunning views of the country. As expected their religious sculptures and structures were immaculate and awe inspiring.

Note: women who are not deemed to be dressed appropriately will be required to wear a dress (that a female guard will put on you) to cover arms, shoulders and legs.

This beach is at a tiny fishing harbor barely noticeable with two jetties. It is probably the closest sandy beach to Hualien city and about 20 minutes closer to the more well known Ciji Beach farther south. The beach is perhaps a kilometer long and has 3 large covered pavilions on the sand which offer shelter from the weather. Although the surf might be too rough to safely swim, it is an attractive beach with a 10 car parking lot and broken down bathroom in poor condition.

Although it is a sandy beach about 1/3 of it is covered with pebble rock patches. There is a coast guard station off the beach with a Taiwanese flag flying. Look for km marker 17 on Highway 11 and turn sharp left turn toward the ocean after the bus stop when you see a small red and white sign indicating the intersection ahead. There is a large fishing boat by the side of the road which is parked as a monument to the fishing village. Descend below and pass the small temple shrine to enter the parking lot.

Luckily with Lily flowers in the beginning of Spring, the green grass , mountain and stone buildings play a perfect background for clear ocean and tides.

Longdong is a fantastic spot for snorkeling. It is a one of a kind experience. To get there you must climb over rocks ranging from bowling ball to car size. I’m 49 and in good health and it took me 15-20 minutes to go from where the street ended to the place where people get in the water.

Make sure you wear closed-toe shoes as the hike can be treacherous. I didn’t know this and wore sandals. I made it but it would have been much better if I had appropriate foot wear. Many people wore booties they rented from the dive shops in the area. They worked but I recommend shoes.

I do not recommend this place for people with foot, knee or leg problems. I think the walk would be too difficult.

Next time I go I will bring everything I need in a backpack so my hands are free to help me get over the big rocks. I will also being more drinking water as well as food. The hike from your car to the water is so far that you won’t want to go back unless it is absolutely necessary.

Longdong is very popular especially on weekends. We went on a Saturday around 11 am and there were already hundreds of people enjoying the water. If you want to take advantage of the free parking you should get there earlier.

If you need to rent snorkeling gear there are quite a few places to choose from. There are even little shops to buy drinks. I only saw one bathroom / shower facility. It was right along the path to the snorkeling beach. There is a small fee to use either of them.

Over all I was so glad that we went here to go snorkeling. I loved every minute of my day here.

I hope my advice will help someone avoid making the mistakes that I made my first time going.
