- Daniel ABeijing, China33,057 contributionsIf you check out top things to do in Guilin, this is a top three. There are many tours to select, but I recommend you get a driver and do it yourself. A guide is not necessary as you will want to go and walk at your leisure. We had two small children and a tour group would not be okay. You want to go and explore on your own, but I must recommend a fan and a wet towel if possible because the cable-car ride is extremely hot in the June sun and quite unbearable. After that, enjoy the scenery and if that is your goal, then you won’t be saddened as the views are spectacular. If it is raining and or cloudy, wait to go on a clearer day.Written August 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - André KHefei, China285 contributionsThis is an amzing site to see. We went when the colour of the rice was changing from green to yellow , absolutely beautiful . There is a cable car to go up the hill but the climb is not to serious . If you are pressed for time take the cable car up and down otherwise enjoy the views and walk through the rice terraces.Written October 9, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PaulaHMSomerset, UK116 contributionsWe walked here when visiting the rice terraces. Very interesting to wander around and get a feel for life here. Lots of photo opportunities. Some places are looking very closed but some are open and welcoming. We had a drink in a cafe with a great view and the people were very friendly.Written May 20, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - HelsBelsAdelaide, Australia168 contributionsThe terrraced rice fields are an amazing sight, although we were unfortunate to have a very wet and foggy day which made it a little disappointing as the weather was not normal for October. It was still spectacular, and worth the long trip to and from Guilin. Our guide was very helpful. We ended up taking a golf cart to the top section due to the weather, then walking around the mountains in the rain and fog, seeing the great views, and experiencing some of the locals and the produce and crafts. We had lunch at an amazing little restaurant before climbing to the bottom. A great day.Written November 12, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- kmarkoSkofja Loka, Slovenia612 contributionsamazing efforts to keep at least some of the ethnic treasures alive. our guide invited two Zhuang Minority women into our pension for a chat and demonstration of their extravagant hair traditions - a cute little private festival :)Written September 22, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JonasCNSingapore, Singapore4,060 contributionsThere are few tourist places that remain authentic and underdeveloped. This is one such reserve. You can still find locals who are ignorant of tourist money, buildings that are authentic and poorly maintained and food prepared by local methods in small dining areas. A great place to visit in spring. Winter is a bit cold at 7 degrees. A reasonable amount of fitness is required as they is a lot walking along slippery and rocky walkways. A must visit before it gets commercialised.Written April 18, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Ale CSingapore, Singapore267 contributionsMost of the Yao people in China live in the mountainous South and Southwest, and Hong Yao is a branch of this ethnic group. We stopped by Huangluo Yao Village enroute to Long Ji Rice Terraces, and enjoyed tremendously this unique performance by the Hong Yao Minority tribe. The women of HongYao are famous for their shiny, black and very long hair.
The performance is staged in a traditional building set among the many souvenir shops in the village. Once you've your tickets, you may enter any time as the show repeats itself every 40 minutes.
Besides the folk singing and dancing, there is also a segment on village life and marriage customs. Male volunteers from the audience are encouraged to participate. More interesting than that is the hair culture of the HongYao ladies. It is amazing how fast and efficient they can style their over 1-metre long hair with just a single comb. Different hair styles denote if the lady is married or unmarried.
For the finale, members of the audience are invited on stage to dance together with the performers.Written October 11, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The parking lot is approx. 300m below the peak and the ascending can be quite tough if you are not used to the weather and the physical exercise. When you reach the top you will see the rice field terraces which were build in the last 1700 years along the hillside of the mountains. It is just spectacular.Written August 21, 2011This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Mark MCootamundra, Australia20 contributionsSpectacular caverns a tiny bit spoilt by coloured lights that did not add much to what is a very beautiful attraction. Very good walkways and help for the tourists.A curious and happy crowd that was mainly chinese but always respectful of the older visitorWritten June 2, 2013This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ESVincentHong Kong, China1,168 contributionsThe village puts on a regular show for the many visitors. Whilst i understand that is a means to share Yao culture, to provide work and income, there was a strong Dinseyesque feeling about this. Mock weddings, lots of people standing on benches and gawping at women bundling their hair.... so a difficult one to assessWritten November 5, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - mickydPrinceGeorgeprince george18 contributionsWe ( six of us, two were could speak Chinese ( very helpful) The hotel was fine, the hot springs were very soothing and tranquil. We stayed one night and ate at a local resturant just down the street from the hotel. It was cheaper and we sampled their local fruit wines ( fine) Food was picked out fresh from cages on the street ! The morning we left we took a walk/hike up into the mountain (cross a small wooden bridge right outside the hotel) met some locals and bought rocks/jade from them. No way would i try driving those roads, We were lucky to have two of our group who are expirenced with the area.Written December 24, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
