Alyth is a small town 17 miles inland from Dundee with a river running through its town square. A good jumping off point for a holiday, with professional tuition for various arts and crafts, taught with an enthusiasm mixed with lively wit and cameraderie. This particular Course taught by professional willow weaver Jane Wilkinson had even novice students producing excellent baskets of a variety of designs and shapes, using a several sorts of natural materials, within the three days of the Course. A walk in Den Alyth gave us more of an understanding of the types of material which could be used in place of willow, and how to forage for them; students could experience sitting in a coracle on the river; visiting a centre where driftwood was for sale was an inspiration on how even items which might have been seen as unusable could be integrated into baskets or other seemingly plain utilitarian objects, even as art forms. Combined with excellent working lunches of home-made soups, delicious cheeses, breads and fruit, fresh pancakes, and home-made cakes, students were well cared for in all respects. This is a Course for all who wish to explore new ways of using naturally-sourced materials in good company with excellent, friendly and helpful tuition.
