They are the epitome of the Zapotec people, and bring their love and energy into their work. It’s truly magnificent to see, hear, and feel their work! Highly recommend a visit to their workshop!Written 30 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- fls35jax beach, florida101 contributionsThis new, two level, cultural center does a wonderful job of giving context to the Zapotec culture governing this village and provides an overview of local handcrafts as well as extensive coverage of the Zapotec governing system of ‘Usos y Costumbres’. Also has an attractive gift shop with very helpful staff. Don’t overlook the CD of the local Banda Filarmonica’s Musica Funebre (brass band funereal music)
Building is architecturally interesting - cast concrete with a ‘wood’ finish
A MUST visit. No entry fee - just a requested donation.Written 21 December 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Right by the rug market.Written 19 March 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Rose PSan Francisco, CA29 contributionsMaria Luisa, Fidel and their son are incredible weavers who generously share their knowledge about traditional designs, natural dyes and weaving. Spending the morning with them was an absolute delight. They even had dried and live cochineals!
I fell in love with so many rugs that I couldn't fit them in my suitcase. No problemo! They shipped them to me. Can't get to Teotitlan? Don't wait, go online! They ship all over the worldWritten 19 February 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. She was very organized and clear about the processes. She taught her talent from the heart. We will do it again for sure!!Written 5 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ebarenWalnut Creek, CA24 contributionsWe have been to Teotitlan on numerous visits to weaving galleries. We enjoyed the presentation but the special moment was to meet the master and his family. Everyone takes pride in their craft and design. Yes prices have increase but when you realize what it takes to go through the process and create a work of art, price takes a different meaning. Support the artists where ever you travel and know the craft you buy directly from the artist has a story and a memoryWritten 16 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - rigobhaMumbai, India40 contributionsThe village of Teotitlán del Valle is a major centre for traditional artisanal rug production in Mexico. Zapotec Rey David and his family own and operate one such workshop, Taller Huella CarmÃn, and in addition to some creative product innovations, they have incorporated a superb hands-on experience of the rug-making process for visitors, starting with the raw wool off the back, sides and belly of the sheep, through the cleansing, combing, spinning, dyeing and weaving stages up to the finished products. With a charming, warm and welcoming family, a fascinating process, hands-on practice and a showroom full of superb end products, this is a fabulous way to spend a long morning if you are in the Oaxaca area.Written 28 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - pohyen3 contributionsI was lucky to wander into this shop which is where the bus service ends near the market. I suppose many would miss it as it is not near the main streets. Benito and his wife were very generous in explaining the process of making the rugs and also showing me part of the process like extraction of colour from the cochineal. In the end, I did purchase a rug from them, and the price is very reasonable considering that it was entirely handmade from start to finish. Thank you for showing me your art.Written 26 May 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Aero3926Midwest297 contributionsWe visited as part of a tour. The explanation and demonstration of how the textiles are made (the fibers used, how they are dyed, etc.) was really interesting and the products beautiful. Definitely worth the stop, but not inexpensive.Written 16 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jean G2 contributionsI was so surprised to see the last review for Arriero Zapotec Rugs was in 2019. This place is a stunning feast for the eyes. Pantaleon Ruiz is so prolific; creating beautiful rugs, to paintings, to sculptures, his work is incredible. Walk through the big blue doors and you’ll see what I mean. Located in Teotitlán Valle, it’s about 40 minutes out of Oaxaca but definitely worth the drive. I worked with Pantaleon directly and even received a warm welcome hug from his very sweet mother. There was no rush or no pressure. I’m happy to be taking home some rugs that I’m sure will add an additional layer of warmth to my home. This was my favorite highlight of my stay in Oaxaca thus far. (And if you need a driver, call Antonio, he too added to the highlight of the day.
