    Review of: Walter Benjamin Memorial
    Simple but Effective
    Lovely memorial with steps down (a tunnel actually) towards the beach but stopping. Signposted in multiple languages and quite sobering words.
    Just a short walk uphill from the main parking area.

    Review of: Platja De Portbou
    Costa Brava beach carved into the side of the Pyrenees
    I used to spend hours on the beach awaiting the arrival of the French train out, or the Spanish train in. Franco didn't want the railways to connect, to keep it difficult for any to exit or enter. Place of stunning beauty, quiet solitude and simplicity. Walter Benjamin Memorial and adjoining public cemetery add profundity to visit. Beware that the roadway leading north from PortBou into France is NOT the modernized AP-7, but rather a twisty, winding, narrow and steep trek of blind curves and hair-pin turns through the Pyrenees - not for the faint of heart!

    Don't miss
    The church is closed but it is very satisfying to see from the outside among the half deserted buildings around it.

    Review of: Exile Memorial
    Moving memorial to the Spanish Civil War
    The hike up the mountain from Portbou (about 30 minutes) gives the visitor a brief feeling of what it must have been like for the refugees who traveled this route in the 1930s. The memorial itself is very informative and there are amazing views down to Portbou.

    Review of: Portbou Railway Station
    Beautiful station, but no amenities
    The Portbou Railway station has seen better days. The station is still an amazing site and effective transportation hub, but there are no facilities open for dining.
