Avoid at all costs!! It’s nothing special and completely overrun with boatloads of tourists. Don’t waste your time. There are far better places nearby. You can get a beautiful beach all to yourself around Los Galeras.

BE AWARE! Thieves live there Stay Away! I felt they rob me I told the police they don’t do anything. They sent us with a supposed guy that ask for lunch and order his drink and put it on my tap. My husband and I order fried fish one with Moro rice and the other one with fried plantains and 5 beer and 2 waters $120 for our lunch and the guy that rob us. Bring your own food and Drinks. The Beach is beautiful but don’t eat there.

This place is a giant tourist trap!!! Stay away! We visited today as a family of 7 including our 5 and 11 year old grandchildren. The beach is nice but the sand is full of trash and the people who run the food concession are thieves. We were charged $185.00US for a fried fish, 3 langostinos, 10 shrimp, a tray of awful rice, some tostones and fries (place was FULL of flies too), 4 Presidentes and 3 coconuts. When we received the bill, naturally we complained bitterly and they had the audacity to bring over an armed police with a GUN in his waistband to threaten to take us prisoners if we didn’t pay their mafia prices! My daughter in law is Dominican and she valiantly tried to help. The “helper” on the boat (chartered from the Bannister Hotel in Samana) was in on the whole thing with his ”best friends” as he described when we arrived. Well he was supposed to stay with us and “protect” us but he was totally in on the SCAM! Learn from our mistake and STAY AWAY!

From the moment of our arrival my wife and I realised we’ve made a mistake having CL included in our package but it was too late to return to the boat!

The island was overcrowded by trashy tourists, too many vendors, loud music and trash everywhere!

There wasn’t a single spot in the beach where we could seat down to enjoy the view without been disturbed by vendors selling cigars and alcohol, loud music blasting from under every parasol, it looks mandatory for Dominicans to bring amplifiers and Speakers with them... and the music, the louder the better!

Long queues to restaurants and no social distance was observed. Not a good food variety on menu and all restaurants serves exactly the same food.

The trash produced in the island stays in the island. Not only organic but plastic, glass and polystyrene too. The place has been completely ruined by the Dominicans!

After lunch we headed straight back to the pier and even our waiting time was dreadful.

Many boats arrives at the same time and boarding was a nightmare. It reminded us scenes of a film where people try to escape
from a country and the last option was that
boat!
Never again!

Part of the beauty of Samana is that it's away from the crowds that choke some our parts of the DR. Except for the public beach at Cayo Levantado. It's extremely crowded, especially if you see a cruise ship parked in Samana Bay. Plus with all the restaurants and vendors, it feels more like Disney than a natural Caribbean experience. Also one of the restaurants there served us parrot fish which we specifically asked not to eat. Though delicious, these fish are the cleaners of the reefs and vital for their health. Due to overfishing of parrot fish, Dominican reefs are in decline. I like to support the local economy, but there's a better way to do it than Cayo Levantado. Yes, it's beautiful, but so are many other area beaches which have waaaaay less people.

I was at this resort for 2 weeks and felt necessary to share this.
For the first week, there was a young boy traveling with his mom. On about the third day Yery invited the wee boy to play bocce ball. He was so kind and attentive to him. Yery played with him every morning. He even sat in the sand and made sand castles with him.
At evening shows, Yery made sure to say hi before he had to go dance. By the end of the week the little boy was imitating Yery and his dance moves.
Was just so nice to see the staff engage with ALL the staff even the little ones.
Yery is a definite ambassador for the resort and so deserving of this accolade!

We spent the afternoon at the public beach when we were in Samana during a cruise. The beach is fine but nothing special in comparison to other Caribbean beaches. It was a busy day and hundreds of people there. That didn't really bother me as the kids had fun. However, it was annoying that during the 3 hours there, we were constantly offered cigars and alcohol and there were also men with parrots who wanted to take pictures. I'm perfectly aware that this is common at a lot of public beaches in the Caribbean, we had just never experienced it before and found it irritating.
We wouldn't do Cayo Levantado again, next time we'll try Playa Rincon.

We only visited Cayo Levantado as we were staying in a private house overlooking it and the google images of it looked amazing.

The reality, I TOTALLY agree with 'romanshorer' in as much as it really is nothing special. It's over populated, overpriced, over crowded and really, most beaches in the Dominican are just as beautiful as this one and depending where you're staying, a LOT more beautiful.

There is in fact 1 beach in the North East of the country which was far more beautiful, 10 times bigger but we only saw a dozen or so people on it, but I don't want to advertise it as it'll just become another mass tourist resort.

Trust me, the beaches in most of the island are just as beautiful as this, but without the mass and shameless tourism, so do yourselves a favour and don't bother with this, we regretted it within 30 minutes of being here

Fantastic resort Iocated on Bacardi Island in Samana.
The Great Service starts at the main entrance to the check in center located on the mainland and only continues to become better after your 15 minute boat ride to the island..
I find the food is great, the staff more than helpful and the Ambiance of a tropical island Paradise will overwhelm you. It's a small yet very home like atmosphere that you will find hard to leave. Enjoy it all....
