Noel Counihan (1913-1986) was a social realist artist who refused to adhere to the tenets of Modernism and went his own way. He was a communist, and much of his work portrayed working people. He provided an alternative to Modernism, and he finally gained much overdue critical recognition. Counihan never abandoned his beliefs, although they were often controversial. His works are now highly valued. The Counihan Gallery is devoted to contemporary art, continuing Counihan's radical outlook.

Noel Counihan (1913-1986) was a radical artist; he painted what he saw. Often his paintings involved working people or industrial environments, such as coal mining. For many years, his realist paintings were unfashionable, but his style was later recognised as an aesthetic alternative to the prevailing Modernist movement, and he is now recognised as one of the 20th century's great realist artists, Counihan worked in a variety of genres; his works are now very valuable and sadly few are on show at the eponymous gallery, which mainly shows contemporary art. The gallery was established by the City of Moreland in 1999.

The Counihan Gallery does not have many works by Noel Counihan, whose paintings are extremely valuable these days. Counihan was a socialist, who painted in social realist style. He had a rough trot during his life. As with many creative artists, his genius was not recognized until after he passed on. The gallery has some good exhibitions, it's well worth a visit., especially if you like contemporary art.

There is a bit of humour and insight in this F_ocus exhibition, open until late April 2020. I loved the iconography of Kim Kardashian and the images relating to indigenous interactions with the colonisers. I especially loved the Marngrook Footy painting.

Noel Counihan was a social realist painter and print maker who used his art to expose social evils. He was a communist and an aetheist. His political viewpoint made him unpopular, but he is now recognised as a major artist. It's fitting that the Counihan Gallery, while small, makes a contribution to social and political discourse. Little of Counihan's own work is on show, but he led the way in creating a contemporary art. form that veeered away from Modernism, a trend that dominated art between the wars but had lost its artistic vitality..

I often pop in here to see what’s on. I have seen many interesting art shows here and the best things is, they’re free! Wonderful to have this in Brunswick.

The exhibitions here change every month or so and are always worth the pop-in visit between errands.

The latest exhibition is a look at the Northern Territory Intervention, ten years later. I was really shocked about how much of what went on (and is still going on) has not got into the broader public domain. It is a powerful exhibition.

Noel Counihan was a leftist artist who tended to concentrate on industrial themes. His works, after a period of neglect, have become popular. The number of his works in the gallery is limited., The gallery is predominantly an outlet for contemporary art by new and emerging artists, . This medium sized gallery is well worth a visit. It adjoins the Brunswick Town Hall in Sydney Road.

Noel Counihan was a social realist artist. He was a member of the Communist Party of Australia, and was a notable defender of civil liberties. His art is important; unfortunately, only one of his paintings hangs in the Gallery, which is devoted to hanging emerging artists. The gallery will open its next exhibition in February 3, 2017. If you like contemporary art, the Counihan Gallery is worth a visit. Most of the art is not representational. Entrance is gratis. The Gallery is in the old Brunswick Town Hall in Sydney Rd, near Dawson Street.
