We were staying at Heavensfield cottage right next door so decided to walk across the field to visit the church. Beautiful situation steeped in history. Lovely views of surrounding countryside. Good information panels inside.

If you like the idea of Oswald, after a long trudge from south west Scotland, assembling his army at this point with his supporting troops from Bernicia, out of sight and sound of Cadwallon's forces, then this is the place to visit!

THis is the historic site of the battle between Oswald - a young Christian king and the pagan invaders originally from the Norsemen. Oswald defeated the dastardly warlords and established a Christian rulership over Northumbria

We found this while on a walk in the area. The church is lovely. If its a nice day though do have a wander around the fields, you can see where the romans changed their minds about the width of the wall!

On this spot, so tradition and history suggest, Oswald won back his kingdom. The reality of the place helps tell the story of the actual battle and why Oswald's troops, outnumbered by the Welsh attackers, were victorious. By establishing themselves in this location, and placing...More

Very simple inside, very spiritual, it is worth finding it and walking over the field to enter through its doors.

This is a beautiful little church accessed over a green field, perched on the edge of the escarpment followed by Hadrian's wall, with a magnificent view north towards Scotland.

Claimed to be the oldest church in England (ninth century I think), but refurbished during the reign of Elizabeth 1.

I had read about this church and although we visit Hadrian's Wall country regularly we had missed it. The Roman alter was found nearby and it contains two stones from an earlier church. There is annual pilgrimage from Hexham Abbey to Heavenfield on the first...More
