Back in the 1890's a group of "entrpreneurs" mistook a compacted vegetable substance (since known as 'coorongite') as evidence that there was oil to be found beneath the coorong. This started an exploration project to hunt for the magical black gold, they were not successful.

To celebrate the lack of success, a Replica Oil Rig has been constructed to honour the failure so that future generations can also join in the disappointment!.

This is one of those great Australian roadside attractions that you have to stop at when you are passing in the car. Take your camera and get a great photo of you and your fellow travellers looking excited in front of this very underwhelming monument.

This is a short visit which should take no more than 5 minutes to read the sign documenting the history of oil in Australia.

There is a picnic table nearby if you would like to make it a longer stay. Climbing on the rig is not permitted.
