I knew very little about the Longobards, having thought that it was one of many barbarian tribes that had invaded the Roman Empire in its last days but this museum opened my eyes to the art and culture of this tribe.
The building that houses the museum was designed by Andrea Palladio as the Palazzo de Provveditori and built between 1565/96. The admission charge was €4 and included a very good lealfet and plan of the musuem in English. The ground floor exhibits include the Roman, early medieval, Patriarchal and Venetian periods. The first room on the first floor contains bronze sculpture decoration and an amazingly lifelike head of "an illustrious person". The rest of this floor is given over to the Longobards - their tombs and grave contents (in one instance a man buried with his horse!), swords, gold coins, exquisite inlaid jewellery, glassware and so on; nearly all the exhibits have a description in English.
The exhibits are well presented with good lighting and plenty of space to move around - a fascinating museum.

We came here after visiting the small Lombard temple.

This place definitely gives you a good understanding of the Lombard culture and day-to-day life, thanks to a lot of artefacts, reconstructions and tombs findings.

The Roman section is good too but I would personally highlight more the Lombard one as there are not so many places in Italy where you can find such a different array of info on this culture!

It wasn't a particularly hot day but the museum was hot, stuffy and airless which detracted from the visit. The museum is well laid out with some beautiful objects from the Longobard period. If it had been cooler inside we would have stayed much longer.

We can learn the rich history of the region and the people of Longobardi. Many well preserved and beautiful ornaments, weapons, archeological fragments on display. The Roman period exhibitions can use more descriptions in English for foreign visitors. The museum is not too big (2 hour visit) A must see!

Interesting collection of Lombard items, in particular the jewelry and coins are beautiful. Also the Roman section is quite valuable.

Delightful little museum right in the centre of town. It covers a couple of floors of the building. There is good signage, and a wide variety of displays. Reasonably priced, it is a good place to get out of the sun for a few hours in the middle of the day. Staff are quite friendly and welcoming. If you can, get a guided tour as you will learn more. The displays are not interactive so it might be a bit boring for children, but they will be interested in seeing so many objects from daily use by the historic citizens, farmers, and warriors of the area.

Came here after visiting the disappointing Duomo Museum nearby, so this was a pleasant surprise. It contains many interesting and often beautiful objects, all of them well displayed and explained. There is a central gallery with a display of remains found in graves, including one containing both a cavalry officer and his horse. If you are in the Friulli region, make sure you find time for this museum.

If you are in Cividale and have free time, then visit the national archaeological museum. You can visit only the archaeological museum or you can buy 3 tickets together. One for the museum, the other one for the temple of Langobardo and the third one is for the Christian museum.

The temple of Langobardo and the Christian museum have divided opening hours, so be careful when to visit them. The archaeological museum is open the whole day. The lady at the Christian museum spoke great English while others didn’t.

All the attractions are nearby. They are not suitable for strollers or people on wheelchairs. If you have a baby with you it’s better to carry it.

At all the three places there was something written in English, but the majority was only in Italian. Therefore I had a feeling like I’ve missed out the half of the exhibition.

In this museum I learned more history of the post roman times in Italy and western Europe than I did in school.
