Wow! It was what I said when I came here. It is huge, unusually round (for historical reasons), main square, but incredibly beautiful. Unfortunately I could only be there for a short time but I could not miss this, now I only have a reason to come back and explore some more. Even if you don't know anything about it, there are various plaques around with texts about the square and city of Palmanova itself.

While the town itself is interesting, the huge piazza in the very centre of the city is not much to see. It is massive but incredibly boring – useful for parades and marshalling military hardware. If you try to walk across the square on a summer day, you will rename it “The Devil’s Anvil”. There is not the slightest bit of shade or relief from the sun. Since there is nothing in the piazza itself, spend your time walking around the edge of the square to discover plenty of shops and restaurants.

Great place to visit for history buffs, military strategy enthusiasts. Best time to visit is on Saturdays at 9:30 AM. Go to the tourist info office for a 2 hr guided tour of the Piazza and the surrounding fortifications. The tour is mostly in Italian but they will accomodate English speakers. The city is not the shopping Meca of the world but the historical importance is facinating. An outlet mall nearby (to the south) is a better place for shopping. We found a great place for sea food at Trattoria "Ai Due Delfini".

It's a small town with a great piazza and wonderful bars. We were there for a concert and we will definitely be back.

There is a fair held every Monday morning from 8 to 12. You can park your car for free at the end of the street just behind the church on the main square. it takes less than 5 minutes to get to the sqare.

This was as far as the Austo-Hungarian empire spanned. Originally, high ranking army officers had lodging around this square.
I with they'd have planted a few trees in the middle.
The idea is nice, and looks interesting on Google Maps. However once there, its just vast emptiness. Plant a tree or two, or something in the middle.
I don't think I'd make a detour again to see this.

Large square with beautiful historical buidings around. It was full of stands with local food and flowers when we walked around on Monday morning... Lots of caffeterias and bars nearby.

Having been to a number of historic sites around Trieste, my friend asked if I knew of anyplace that I might be interested in seeing. I commented that I had seen something about Palmanova, he noted that it wasn't to far.
Arriving at the city, the first thing I noticed was the walls around the city and that we had to go through a gate to get into the city. We went on a Saturday morning and the piazza in the city was not very busy.
After paying for parking, we began our tour of the city, starting with the square. Although necessarily a great looking square, it is nicely laid out. Basically you can cut across the square on the slightly graveled/rough square or you can walk around the perimeter of the square.
We walked the perimeter; several bars/cafes are located along edges; also quickly saw that many of the statues were missing hands; but it was interesting. Right next to one of the streets leading to another gate; there is a nice semi-open building which appears to be a series of war monuments to various individuals from the different wars that their residents participated/died in or served.
The church is very nice and is the dominant building in the piazza; however, since a wedding was being held, we were only able to spend about 10 minutes visiting after the wedding concluded.
During our visit several replica machines were on display; these featured ancient/medieval methods for moving rocks, etc.
Overall although not an exciting visit; it was a nice place to walk through a somewhat typical Italian town. (except for it being a star fortress shape.)

Palmanova has quite a bit of history... it is a walled city and you must still enter through gates. Traffic (cars and bikes) take turns entering or exiting according to the lights..the gate is narrow. Very interesting street layout...radial from the grande Piazza out to the edge of the town at the wall. We rode our bicycles into the village and out again the next day and stayed overnight at a great hotel with reasonable prices: The Hotel Ai dogi right on the plaza. The bar next to the hotel has been voted the number one bar in Italy in 2013. The chef is a leader in the slow food movement and prepares wonderful assortments of tapas like creations all made with fresh ingredients from local sources. It must be tried. The tiny pastries should not be missed.

Walking to the discovery of the star-shaped fortress-city was most rewarding.Biking around the defensive walls and moat was a must at sunset.Proper attention to traffic is essential at the city gates.Find out the dates when the city is re-enacting the past in full pomp and ceremony, simply enthralling.
