About
Hope was our first rescue in January 2004, Dusty the second. Since then over 450 donkeys have been taken into our refuge here in Corfu. As a refuge we aim to give: the old a safe and happy retirement; the sick a chance of cure; the injured the chance of recovery; the abused the chance of regaining trust and hope and the abandoned the feeling of security again. Take a look on our website for more information, pictures and a detailed map.You are very welcome to visit us, see the work we do and experience the calm company of our donkeys.

You can see all of the animals are really well looked after they even have some rabbits and a chicken! All of the animals are so loving and are so happy to see you. We visited 2 times on our holiday as I loved it so much. Thank you for looking after the animals!Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 13, 2023
- louisaaaxHorsham, United Kingdom87 contributionsWorth a visitWe hired a car for the hotel and ventured here. Really lovely place. Free to visit but you can leave a donation. So many donkeys to see and you can pet and brush them. The donkeys are very friendly and tame. There were some cats and dogs here too. The donkeys also have little name tags. Really lovely place to visit in Corfu.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 20, 2023
- Kelly WilliamsYork, United Kingdom20 contributionsMore cats than Donkeys, but nice to visit.First things first, if you are in a big car check the route before you go. We missed the first turn off, and it took us another route which was barely even wide enough for our tiny car. Whilst the main roads in Corfu are well maintained, the roads to the Donkey rescue are not, so bare this in mind. It is quite high up, and it is HOT up there this time of the year, so remember your suncream and water. There were 29 donkeys (I think) and some were more sociable than others. There are brushes available if you want to brush them. The main appeal of this place was the fact that there was about 100 cats!! They were all so friendly and sociable and loved a good fuss!! Take some antibacterial gel or wipes with you as well for when you are done, there is a toilet on site but it's not the best. The owner was lovely, and is English. She will explain to you about all the different sections, and although we did leave a donation, we didn't feel pressurised to do so.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 30, 2023
- Cruiser6895911 contributionA Must See for all Animal LoversIf you are an animal lover, you MUST visit the Donkey Rescue Centre. We had a fantastic trip, walking amongst the donkeys and also the many cats (and a few dogs) that they also provide much-needed care for. It fills your heart to see these animals cared for so well. You can walk amongst the animals, stroke the donkeys and cats (the dogs are shy) and the donkeys also love a nice brush! Please do visit, please leave a generous cash donation..... they are all volunteers here and rely on donations to keep the center running!Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 1, 2023
- Smadalina898 contributionsLovely present for animal loversThe tour and the gentle muels were heart melting. There are also many cats to give some attention to. Lyra was definitely my weekness. She was apart of the other muels in the back of the yard and she definitely loved giving smiles and receiving attention. Devlin was a sweetheart and asked for attention taking me up.to the entrance gate when i left. Irwing was very calm and liked being combed. Judy, the owner, was a lovely person willing to provide info. I highly recommend donations and visits to the resvue center. Food for soul i call it. Enjoy the company of around 30 muels and tens of cats in a green wild area!Visited August 2023Traveled soloWritten August 10, 2023

After an initial chat with one of the volunteers we wandered around the site patting the Donkeys and being followed by multiply cats. - Engineer9199Tsouknída, Greece1,747 contributionsCould have been more organisedWe used to run a small animal sanctuary so we always visit a charity if we are nearby, Donkeys, turtles, bears, wolves…. We tried numerous times to find the rescue centre but failed as there are no sign posts anywhere. Eventually on the third attempt we found it! The small bumpy road didn’t do our car any favours and I had to jump out at one point to move some brambles which would have scratched the car. There’s no car park as such just some waste land with cars parked in all over the place. We were greeted by a lot of cats 🐱 which was wonderful. Inside the gates we were just told to wander around and stroke the donkeys. They have over a hundred cats, some look healthy, others not so much. Some of the cats had sticky eyes, easily treatable with Tobrex from the pharmacy for a few euros and some were so thin you could feel their vertebrae. We wandered around brushing and stroking the donkeys but it would have been nice if one of the volunteers had told us the names of the donkeys and the stories behind their rescue instead of sitting on their phones We did ask questions but felt we were interrupting the girls on social media. We found out the founder was actually quite poorly so maybe without her presence the place is not running as efficiently. If it was my centre I would have organised tours and give the stories behind the donkeys. I’d also treat some of the unhealthy looking cats. A little disappointing if I’m honest…Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 19, 2023
- ALLANLondon, United Kingdom7 contributionsLovely peaceful place 5th October 2023This was a planned visit during our holiday after reading about the wonderful work that the volunteers are doing to give these beautiful Donkeys and their cat and dog companions the time, love and care enabling them to live out the rest of their lives in safety. They are being loved and cared for by wonderful people who give their time freely. Thank you for looking after them. We plan to help from afar by way of donations. If visiting Corfu please go to the Sanctuary and see for yourself if you are able to. Donations are welcome on site although there is no pressure as the Donkeys and companions will be pleased to see you. But if you are able to help please do so.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2023

A beautiful sanctuary that really shows it's care for animals that need a home.
It's a heart melting experience that offers many ways we as a society can help!
Don't think twice - this is a once in a lifetime experience. Really no other place like itself.

It's 19 kilometres from Agios, that's about 36 minutes , be aware there is only a small sign on the road for the turn off that leads you to the donkeys
How far from the cruise port is this sanctuary and what’s the best mode of transportation to get there please?

Has anyone had any luck with using a taxi from the cruise port in Corfu, to the sanctuary, and back again? If so, could you recommend a specific taxi service? Thank you.

Should be easy getting there as there are taxis outside the port. Not certain about getting back as the sanctuary is in the country side. Send an email to the sanctuary and I'm sure they can advise

Hi , it's about 29kms from Benitis, which takes approx 50 minutes , it's free to visit and you can make a donation if you want to, take some carrots to feed the donkeys they are adorable, it's well worth the visit the staff are amazing , only thing is it's quite hard to find , signs are small so plan your trip before you go ☺

Grazie a chi mi risponderà.

Hi,
We used the phone's GPS and we easily found the Donkey Rescue. The road leads you to a narrow one through olive-woods,don't think it's a wrong one despite the remote area you'll get there. You can find a small but nice parking lot just in front of the entrance. Also if you see sings saying something like "donkeys on the road" you're definitely heading towards it :)Hope you'll have a great time there!Nora
