Modrudalur is a village located in the eastern part of Iceland. Right in the middle of "nowhere" in the wilderness of Iceland, you will find the highest inhabited farm in Iceland Modrudalur at 469 meters above sea level. Modrudalur is a popular tourist destination. The tourist services here operate year-round. Various trails have been marked through the area, which prides itself on wide panoramas and amazing silence. There is also a beautiful church in the village. The remarkable, tiny church was built by the farmer himself, Jon Stefansson, in 1949. Lovely place.

Our seniors tour group of 22 came down the gravel road from Highway 1 to have lunch at Fjallakaffi on the farm. Looking briefly around the farm, I think it probably is a very nice place to camp or rent a cabin. It's sooo peaceful and beautiful there. And the wandering goats were delightful.

As for lunch, I opted for a bowl of "Moss Soup." Mistake! Our Icelander tour guide explained that as a girl her mother gave it to her because it is so healthful. Uh... the creamy soup was SOOOO SWEEEET I could not finish my bowl.

Despite the fact that the farmers have allowed a bunch of ugly camper vans to block the stunning view of Herðubreið, the new deck was welcome as we sat there to eat the fabulous hjónabandssæla. The past two times that I'd been there, apart from a few other intrepid tourists, it was just us and the wind. This time, the expansion was evident. Perhaps the camping sites could be put behind the restaurant, but go check it out anyway.

It is always a pleasure to stop at Möðrudalur and have a soup or a cake at the Fjallakaffi restaurant. I went for the moss soup this time, which may sound a bit unusual and I heard different opinions about this soup, but I must say I am a fan of this sweet and uncommon soup! Would definitely come back again.
