We do this from South Africa, but I would imagine that the best and possibly one of the least expensive options from LA would also be to book a flight with Singapore airlines to Manado (I think United airlines are star alliance partners and Silk Air are Singapore air's domestic flights) The flight time to Singapore is about 17 hours, then about 3 hours to Manado but luggage can then be booked straight through which makes it less stressful.

This place is know for muck diving all sandy bottom with macro critters. If you are thinking to explore and snorkel head over to Bunaken Island it’s just a few hours by boat and care to Buanken Island In North Sulawesi Manado. Hopes this help
