We chose Scicli as a base for a visit to the towns of Ragusa, because it is less expensive than the neighboring towns. We were pleasantly surprised by this magnificent fish, by far what we liked the most. It really feels like going back in time and finding yourself immersed in the baroque. The beauty and richness of the many churches is exceptional. If, like me, you are a fan of Inspector Montalbano, it is basically like being in the land of toys since as you turn you find one of the sets of the famous television drama. Unfortunately, to get there from Palermo like us, it takes 4 hours by car, but it's really worth it.

At night you can take a little tourist train from the piazza that takes you around all the old buildings that are lit up at night. (There's also one in Modica and Ragusa.) It's a incredible way to see the city as it looks so different during the day.

We drove our rental car 27 km south from Ragusa's Hotel Montreal. An overlook on the descent into Scicli provided great views to include the lonely 18th C San Matteo across the valley. With Google Maps set on Piazza Busacca, it was easy to park on the outskirts along Corso Umberto 1.
We began our circuit with 300 meters south to the Palazzo Busacca with it 18th C Church/Monastery of Carmine. On to 18th C Palazzo Beneventano with its sculpted faces, then the main square's San Ignazio with its cream and blue interior, then to the gorgeous Baroque interior of 18th C San Bartolomo. Here, we reversed to the north taking side streets to 19th C San Michele Archangelo, then along pretty Via Penna making our way back to our car.
We were fortunate to have bright sun and mostly open churches this Sunday morning for an excellent 3 km stroll in this Baroque city with no steps.

This is a beautiful baroque city but whoever is driving tourism appears to think that tourists will be prepared to pay for every building they wish to visit while having virtually no other resources to accommodate their needs. Finding a restaurant to eat in is almost impossible with only two appearing to be open, one of which is not good value or quality. As an experienced traveller with a good knowledge of Italy and good language skills I felt despondent. I searched down all the non-tourist areas as well as the key squares and found nothing. Eventually I came upon one thanks to a friendly bar owner. A tourist office and network has been set up and there are employees at the entrance of all major sites that are open and whose job is to charge entrance fees. Even though I could enter for nothing, I did not on principle. I have never seen this type of approach in other parts of Sicily or in Italy and I feel that the Ragusa area which is relatively new to tourism has made bad decisions which are likely to deter a second visit. Tourists do not want to feel 'ripped off' and at the moment that is happening not just in this city but in restaurants and bars in others. So sad.

Please don't get me wrong - I enjoyed Ragusa and Modica but Scicli and Noto are 2 special places plus they are small enough to really get around. I did a day trip via the train (For anyone coming via train be aware the train station is now a working police station!) And am delighted I was able to get to Scicli. When leaving the train station turn left and about 15 min later be prepared to be blown away. The buildings are in fantastic shape, do get lost in the little nooks and crannies going up the hill with the small winding roads and the churches are a must. Very impressive. Enjoy!

Scicli is not always on the beaten track of the more flamboyant Ragusa Ibli and Modica, Noto route - however it is SO worth the extra few miles to include it in your tour of the south. There are a number of locations here which have been used in the TV detective Montelbano series which you can access - (including the Chemists shop and the District Commissioner's Office);a number of wonderful churches for those of you who like their Baroque slightly less flamboyant and pastel, and a couple of Palazzo's to wander around and walk back into the nineteenth century before Italian Unification unwound the aristocracy.]Plenty of good quality eateries and good quality coffee abounds - as well as a climb up to the mountain top church which overlooks the town. All in all an engaging morning or afternoon can be spent here - or why not overnight at one or two of the hostelries here as you break your journey. Really lovely, deserves to be better known.

We drove to Scicli from Ragusa Ibla, easily parked our car outside the old town and walked along a very ordinary street into the direction of Piazza Italia, the central square of Scicli. We stopped to ask for directions and, when we asked where the Baroque treasures are, the young guy replied with a smile "Tutto Baroque!". Indeed! A couple more steps and we were facing the first Baroque church, beautiful Chiesa Sant'Ignasio... literally two minutes walk from there and we were looking at the graceful Church of St.Bartolomeo... then we continued along the famous UNESCO Heritage site street and admired gorgeous Church of St.Giovanni Evangelista...and so many magnificent late Baroque palazzos decorated with elaborate sculptures and wrought iron balconies... Scicli is such a delightful, walkable, charming Baroque town! Do not miss it, if you are in Val di Noto.

We stayed nearby for a week in a villa for 8 and couldn’t get enough of pottering around this beautiful town.

Still mainly local families but such a warm friendly welcome everywhere we went.

Beautiful shops, churches and restaurants without the crowds of Modica.

Easy to get to the sea.

We love Scicli - highly recommend a trip

We visited Scicli on this, our third, visit to the area after having in the past visited the other Baroque cities of Notto, Ragusa Ibla and Modica. I must say we were not overly impressed and would not bother to return.
Yes, there is the regular clutch of Baroque churches all with individual charm but, as a whole, the city is very "down at heal" and offers little more.
To illustrate this, one of the supposed "must see's" is The Old Pharmacy".
This venerable establishment is only just over 100 years of age and, even more disappointingly, is not even in the original location. Apparently, the original store was dismantled and moved a few years back to it's current location.
My advice? Unless you really need to see the churches or have little else to do for an afternoon, give this a miss and head to Ragusa or Modica

Like many others we were drawn here by the connection with the Inspector Montalbano TV series with the express objective of visiting the building used as the police station and his office. But that done there is so much more to this small Baroque town and even Via Penna, the elegant pedestrianised street in which the Il Municipio town hall building resides is lined with Baroque palaces and churches. I can recommend paying the full 4Euro ticket that gets you into Il Municipio, the Palazzo Spadaro and the wonderful Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo, all located on Via Penna.
And then a further stroll around town can take in the relaxing cafes around Piazza Italia and the other baroque buildings including the striking Palazzo Beneventano and the churches on either side of the headland on which the abandoned Chiesa di San Matteo dominates.
And if you have the time and ability great views can be had by climbing to the aforementioned Chiesa di San Matteo
However if you are coming or going by car from the Modica direction then for equally stunning views I recommend using the SP42 instead of the SP54. The Strada Provinciale 42 leaves the northern end of Scicli, but then snakes its way up the valley to a high point above the town which affords superb views back into Scicli
