We took 2 tires before getting the view we loved. Drivers just go all the way up first and have a look at the caldera. On the way down you will be able to enjoy the horse ride and it’s a bit expensive but the...More

Great timing of our trip - they’ve finally reopened Aso and you can go right to the edge. Parking is 410 Yen and your ticket works in both car parks. Early morning trek up Mt Eboshidake followed by the crater itself is highly recommended. The...More

Aso geopark is a place that contains both rope way to the crater (its closed cause of Aso eruption in 2016), Aso museum with the so called biggest permanent projection in Japan, and a gift shop. Still a worthwhile trip even if i cant go...More

The drive to the geopark is scenic. Surrounded by mountain range and maiden grass all around. Could see the crater from a distance. There are a few trekking paths there. Another interesting activity is the horse riding at the foot of the mountain !

Due to recently volcano activities, you cannot go up to the crater and could only see the damaged temple near the parking lots.

We really enjoyed the area - hiked a bit and got some great pictures of the volcano puffing. The roads in the area are still very disrupted from 2016 earthquake. Sat nav may send you places you can't go.

The appearance of lukewarm and lava is impactful. I feel the life of Aso and even the blood flow of the earth. The only place in the world. A place to go without fail.

The area 1km from the peak/crater is close due to volcanic activity. Cable car is not working. The shrine, offices at the peak is deserted. Please check latest information before visiting.

Geopark is partially closed when we were there due to an eruption in 2016. We did experienced snowy weather when we were up at the peak so we can't really see much. A bummer since we travel over 2.5 hrs from Kuamamoto. There are only...More

Within shouting or walking distance of the main active crater. Whether you're a fan of Mount Aso or just a general volcano enthusiast. There is considerable volcanic activity when I visited therefore couldn't approach the caldera on foot. I had to be content with a...More
