We stopped on your way from Moroto to Jinja. Oppio our guide took us through the 3 major painting sites, explaining each time the meaning of the paintings but also talking about the history of the site from Prehistory to the more recent Karamojjong raids). Oppio then took us through the minor sites through the back of the rocks, going through fields of sesame and sorghum. Outstanding views of the region. The visit lasted 2hours. We paid 75 000UGX for two people (30), a guide (20) and the right to picture (25). There is a little climbing to be done. In fact plenty of rocks to climb and children could have great fun there!

The Nyero Rock paintings are rock paintings in Uganda located in the Eastern part of the country on the mother land of teso, its just in the Boarder of mother Kumi district and recenly created Ngora district, the rock paintings lie in Nyero sub-ounty, Kees parish in Moru Ikara village. They comprise a three-tiered rockshelter with primitive paintings on their inner surfaces. Archaeologically, the site dates back to the Later Iron Age. The makers of the paintings cannot be identified, but the ingenuity with which they were painted demonstrates a high degree of appreciation of their aesthetic values. The destination is one of the Uganda's good destination with various attractions like: The primates especially the vervet monkeys, the Red tail Monkey and others, Birds with over 300 bird species, The Rock art, The Susa prayer Mountain which collects over 1000 christias yearly, rich Iteso cultures nd many more.Despite the fact that the destination is still under utilised due to several challenges thatare seriousily affecting the paintings like poor infrastructure, little or no no marketing of the site or if i could say that Ugandan government have just forgotten the site.Creadit goes to UNCEF and the Koreans of Kumi University for the they are doing for the conservation of the site. I call upon all tourism investors and other private investors that come and develope this pottential area it has already power and other neccesities on site. MAY GOD BLESS UGANDA AND MOTHER LAND OF TESO

We stayed at Mbale for three nights and since there is not much to do around we decided to visit the Nyero Rock Paintings. We took a matatu to Kumi and then a boda-boda to the site. The price as always is negotiable, our boda-guys did it for 6000 UGX pp for the return trip which is reasonable for 8 km one way. There is an entrance fee of 10000 UGX pp as well and the guide charged another 10000 UGX for guiding us. We agreed and I think it was worth it. He told us much about the paintings and the theories around them and could answer most of our questions. It is definitely worth a visit and takes you about one hour on the site, so it was a half-day trip from Mbale and back.

Good to see while in the area but not worth a special trip unless you are really into this kind of thing. Guide was helpful and informative. Fees were 15,000UGX entry per person and we paid 20,000 UGX to the guide.

The paintings are well worth a visit, it's not everyday you get to see prehistoric rock art! The guides tried to tell us the entry fee was higher but didn't argue when told we new what the correct fee was. It's slightly more of a trek than advertised as the 3 sites are not exactly next to each other & require a little bit of climbing, it is not wheelchair friendly. An hour is more than enough time & provided a welcome diversion on the way to Sipi.

Whilst not a must it is an interesting place to visit. The paintings are slowly wearing away. They do give an insight into living many years ago and it is advisable to go with one of the guards

There are 6 shelters in total and out of them 3 are main:

Nyero 1 - Series of geometric and abstract paintings which may once have been used for sacred rituals, such as: rain-making and fertility.

Nyero 2 - This is the biggest and highest paintings, painted using ladders over 5000 years ago. Initially these paintings are said to be made by Pygmies (A tribe).

Nyero 3 - Small low shelter accessible from behind with ceiling paintings that includes sets of concentric circles painted in white. This (painting) symbol was also adopted by the Uganda Museum as their Logo.

A must must must visit when you are in or near to Mbale.

The locals have done well with developing the site and surprisingly not tampering with the drawings on the rocks. It's just like I saw it on Google. The guides were nice and the location is perfect. We drove up to the rocks. The guide was well conversant with what he was talking about, I learnt a lot.
