A lovely white-painted church was built in 1837, on a small rise in the heart of today’s infamous St. Lawrence Gap. It seems an odd place for it to be the church to be surrounded by dozens of bars and restaurants. But in the past, this area was called Bath Village and the Church/school was built to reduce the distance the local people had to walk to pray. From its early years as a chapel to present times, it has been renovated and added on numerous times. St. Lawrence Church today is probably the oldest, most traditional church building in the surrounding area. The sound of the sea crashing on the rocks below complements the choir, and the gentle Seabreeze flowing through the open church windows gives a peaceful and spiritual feeling. The rector? at the church was a font of knowledge. The church was beautiful as was its setting. We foumd it unusual that there are no longer any burials in the cemetery due to the encroachment of water from the ocean disturbing the graves.
