About
The museum's opening is the result of the discovery in 1993 of a remarkable 1100 year old palace within its walls. It's the best conserved Carolingian civilian building in Europe.Since the 10th century till nowadays, the castle has been used as : palace, fortified castle, prison and now a museum. You will discover the castle history as well as archaeological collections from the Middle Ages.

Not a long visit but really well presented with a demonstration of various weapons on the day we visited. Low cost for entry too.

Excellence in a small museum
Jul 2019 • Couples
We regularly take our guests to visit Chateau Mayenne Musée. Exellent presentations tell the story of the history of this amazing Chateau dating back to 800ad. The story of the architecture of the chateau, fascinating artifacts finds from the region & the archaeological excavations undertaken in the site. There is also a opportunity to visit early building remain the crypt. Not to be missed when visiting historic Ville Mayenne.

Small, friendly museum

I love the Castle Museum in Mayenne. I have visited several times. Exhibits change throughout the year. Staff very helpful and friendly. They also speak good English if your French is rusty. Throughout the year there are events organised both in the museum and in the grounds outside. This year I have enjoyed a Medieval Fair and the European Night Event where the museum is open at night, free, with a sort of turn of 19th/20thC fair indoors. Outside there is a large grassed area, complete with seating and bandstand. Ideal to take a picnic to on a warm day. Mayenne is a largely undiscovered little gem of NW France.

This castle and museum is fascinating for its architecture, dating back to Carolingian times (8th-9th centuries), and full of interesting exhibits, including separate exhibitions, a special Joan of Arc room, archaeological artefacts, and audio-visual displays. Highly recommend.

A very enjoyable trip

My wife and I were takeń to the museum by two friends who live nearby.

Unfortunately the museum was closed when we went there. However we enjoyed strolling around the web manicured gardens, both floral, vegetable and herbal. The buildings were also very interesting, with the old stonework being in good condition.

A very enjoyable trip.

Interesting

The teens quite enjoyed this trip for an hour or two. Again, the French could spend more display space on stories of people who have occupied the chateau (it has an interesting history) and less on architecture .... Don't miss the crypt - it would be easy to!

This is well worth a visit, plenty to see, with excellent displays and roman artifacts. The building itself is also outstanding, overlooking the river Mayenne.
