There are more than one story about this waterfalls but one legend says that this waterfalls appeared after the identical twins, Maria and Cristina were bathing in the Agus River. Maria, the younger twin, was carried by the current. Cristina tried to save her sister, but the current was so strong that both of them drowned. People were amazed when a beautiful twin waterfalls came about from were the sisters perished. And everyone called it Maria Cristina.

This legendary waterfalls is the outlet of Lake Lanao through Agus River. It is sometimes called the "twin falls" as the flow is separated by a rock at the brink of the waterfall. The 320 - feet (98 meters) high waterfalls is also the primary source of electric power for the city's industries, being harnessed by the National Power Corporation - Agus Hydroelectric Power Plants.

The Maria Cristina falls are majestic. We were lucky to have a guided tour from the hydro plant company, since the park is at this moment closed for tourists. However it will eventually open again soon. You walk (or drive) along the Agus river, where the two last hydroplants are located. There is a bat cave where you can see and hear hundreds of bats on the hunt for insects. In front there are the waterfalls - usually twin falls - falling down into the fast running Agus river. There seemed to be rafting and zip lining before which is cancelled right now, but I really would like to go there again.

Maria Cristina Falls is the pride of Iligan City. It is a twin waterfall. The legend goes that the identical twins, Maria and Cristina were bathing in the Agus River, and Maria was carried by the current. Cristina tried to save her sister, but the current was so strong, that both of them drowned. People were amazed when a beautiful twin waterfall came about, and everyone called it Maria Cristina.

It seems more in image than actual. May be worth it once. Not every one's choice. There are more to see than just this fall..

You can take a jeepney from downtown Iligan and ask the driver to drop you off at the crossroad to the falls. From here there are habal habal riders waiting to take you the short trip to the entry gate.
The day I went the falls was temporarily closed for security reasons to protect the hydro electric plant but my habal rider advised me a small donation to the security guard would secure me entry for a short period of time. You only need a short time as you can only view and take some photos. There are tables and seating under a covered pavillion which you could utilise when the site is open but you would need to bring your own food and drinks.
It would be more spectacular if you could get up closer to the falls but I respect its use to the hydro electric plant which requires protecting.
Worth a visit in conjunction with other waterfalls in the area.

Currently closed for public viewing but the security gives passess specialy to tourism who came all the way from far away place. No entrance fees as of the moment but you can give donations to the security guards.

You will be needing to hire a habal habal is you are not into walking.

It is just amazing to return and see the cascading falls after 5 years.
The fall, the rain forest and the river are all in harmony to be watch or seen.
Amazing and beautiful nature in sight.

Like what was mentioned on the previous posts...It is not open to the public.

When we got there the guard told us that they couldn't let us in since it is closed for public viewing. I told them that it's my 2nd time in Iligan already however, it was my hubby's 1st time and he really wants to get a glimpse of the famous falls. So after assuring the guard that we are good people. He let us in but he asked his colleague to come with us. Since we rented a taxi to take us around town, he came with us in the car.
We were only there for less than 20 minutes. We just took some nice photos and videos.

There are no tricycles in Iligan so if you want to go around town you need to take a cab or rent a van. We got a good deal from our driver - Kuya Zandro (PM me so I can provide his mobile# in case you are looking for trustworthy person to take you around town.

It is a must to visit Maria Christina falls! Just be nice to the security guards and ask them politely so they can let you in.

We boarded a jeepney and went with the family to see the falls. It was a little ride from town, not too bad. They had a snack place to sit and eat snacks or if you brought a lunch. The river from the falls flowed beside the snack area, pretty! You can walk fairly close to the falls for taking pictures from a concrete area with a fence railing. Afterwards, we went through the gardens and saw the animals at the zoo type structure. The butterfly room was cool.
