About
As long time Malapascua residents, Matt and Anna Reed, started CrossFit Agila as a passion project to bring mindful wellness and healthy living to the island. We welcome CrossFitters of all levels from curious first timers to seasoned athletes, all meeting and having fun together in a relaxed environment. CrossFit means different things to different people, to us it means Fitness for Life. Being able to sit, stand, run, jump, lift and throw; to be able to pick up our kids, play games with our friends and family, and have a happy level of ‘general physical preparedness’.

This reviews been a long time coming. I used to train at this gym when I lived on Malapascua for 7 months. The island was tiny and I needed something to occupy myself when not working. The gym is pretty well decked out with good quality gear. Pretty nice after training at some of the other DIY-home-fabricated gyms made from rebar and construction materials I'd been to in the Philippines.

Good gear pales in to insignificance when the membership is near extortionate (probably why the gym was always empty) and the owner is tightly wound, a little neurotic and quick to point the finger.
The only time I had to train was after work and before her classes started. I had my own workouts that I felt benefited me better than her classes. I know my body and works for me and that should be understood by a fellow fitness enthusiast right? When I came, she would often be doing a pre-class workout. I felt uncomfortable when training a long side her, like I was always being watched in anticipation of putting a single hair out of line as though I was an unwanted house guest. She used to complain to me about her husband Matt, not putting big pieces of gear back after use (rower, treadmill, barbells etc.). I took note to myself that she likes her gym orderly. Fair enough. However, admittedly I did leave some chalky hand prints on a pull up bar after forgetting to clean them off but, no ones perfect right? Everyone forgets to clean or put things away 100% of the time. Anyway, I was merrily going about doing a workout one day when she marched over, clearly seething and angrily accused me of not replacing a weight the day previous and snapped that she wanted me out of the gym before her class started. I did what anyone else would do and told her with honesty that it wasn't me. She must have expected me to go along with her story line and back down quietly with my tail between my legs and beg for forgiveness because this rattled her something rotten. I honestly felt as though I was dealing with a petulant school girl, not a professional cross-fit trainer and business owner when she stormed off trailing her bottom lip, huffing and puffing before sitting 10ft away and staring daggers at me as I finished my work out before her classes started (with 5 minutes to spare). She leapt to her feet, stormed past me while I talked with a friend at the back of the gym and promptly returned with half a months membership in cash and told me I wasnt allowed to train there anymore because I'm disrespectful towards her and her equipment.

I think there was some resentment on her behalf that after a few weeks I'd stopped participating in her classes and that she was basically looking for an excuse to kick me out despite being one of her few regular paying clients. I dont really think that she conducts herself professionally as a business woman and I'm not surprised to see that reflected in the other reviews on google and the opinions of the locals who tended not to like her.

In summary, if you want to be overcharged for amateur tutoring, an uncomfortable atmosphere, rigid training rules, regulations and time frames as well as petulant dick-swinging attitude and a lot of expensive training gear, this is the gym for you.

As a new resident of Malapascua, I was thrilled to learn that there was a Crossfit box on such a tiny island. After only 6 weeks of crossfit and coaching by the Reeds, I’ve noticed a huge increase in my physical performance and am able to do so much more than I was able to before. Classes are intense but fun and the spirit of camaraderie that is created by the owners and residents is what keeps me coming back. This box should be on the top of any Crossfit travelers wish list!

Open Air CrossFit Agila has everything you're looking for your CrossFit or Training.
The equipment is really well maintained and the owners Matt and Anna let you feel at home. They would drive you throughout your CrossFit process. Either you're a pro or beginners they would show you their love and passion for workout by teaching you their knowledge. I really love it and most important you keep yourself very fit. The classroom are a great mix between foreigners and locals so you have the chance to know everyone.
Thanks Matt and Anna, you're doing really a great job!

In a very unlikely location- we've encountered this cozy and warm box.
Highly equipped with everything a crossfit place needs- from weights to machines.
The Reeds are really welcoming so the WOD was a blast - a really good pause from the divings.

Registraition to the WODs on the box site.

This little gem is hiding on beautiful Malapascus Island, north of Cebu. So far mostly known for diving with Thresher sharks, it should be on your boxtourism radar as a CrossFitter! Anna and Matt Reed coach all classes with enthusiasm and support, the equipment is super new and everybody makes sure to keep the box clean and use it with respect.
The compound features a beautiful set up „indoors“ and outdoors, with lots of rigs, a sledge, peckboard... go see for yourself!

Loved it, will come back!
