If you are into hiking, this is the place to visit on the South Island. There are numerous day hikes for all fitness levels. Even if the weather is cloudy, the mountains provide a magical backdrop.

We decided to drop by since we were on a 2-night stay in Lake Tekapo and Mt. Cook Village is less than an hour away. The scenery along the drive alone is already beautiful, with Lake Pukaki and Mt. Cook on the background. Arriving at...More

I’m so glad that we fit Mt. Cook into our plans. It was well worth the trip. While you feel a bit like you’re in the middle of nowhere, it’s so peaceful there. There are so many options for hiking which all give awesome views...More

Visited Mt Cook Easter weekend and we were pleasantly surprised as there wasn’t many people around. Stunning views, loads of walks etc Only down side was there was only one place to eat breakfast and it wasn’t that great.

Truly stunning area. Although there was no snow - just glacier ice covers the mountain - this place is remarkable in its beauty. If you can see it on a clear day later in the afternoon or in the early morning you can see the...More

We camped at Aoraki three nights walking around was inspiring, very special, gotta go back and climb to the hut. We found a shower in the village which helped. Cafe did to. Great place for walking and camping.

We were driving from Queenstown to Lake Tekapo and wanted to take in Mount Cook without going all the way to Mt Cook Village. There is a look out point on Highway 8 at the bottom of the lake but I agree with TorontoMac if...More

When we arrived at the hotel at 4pm our rooms where not done. Had to wait until 5pm to get the key.🤨 No aircon or fans in the whole hotel and that day was particularly warm. The food was very good and the views stunning.

We didn't want to do a particularly long walk, but still wanted views. The drive there is scenic, and there was a 50 min each way walk to see Mueller lake and Kea point. Well worth the time. At Kea point you can see the...More

It is very beautiful. Even with frequent clouds and mist it is interesting. There are several hiking trails well worth doing. For the adventurous, there are aerial sight seeing options although they are pricey.

September in New Zealand is still consider winter months as the seasons are opposite in the United States. The weather changes at Mt Cook can change very quickly so you need to be prepared for both cold and hot

As Robert D has said the chances overall are about 1 in 3 or 4 but the weather, like UK, goes through phases so you can get a much better estimate 5-10 days ahead from NZ's good weather forecasting service. This may enable... More
