We wound up having lunch at the lakeshore one day, and at a restaurant on the cliffs around the lake another day. Both were really nice. The lake is famous for ocassionally changing colors, and we got to see a bit of this change-over in progress one of the days we were there. Very cool!

Lago de Coatepeque is a 6km lake formed in the caldera of a extinct volcano. It will be your landscape as you drive to the Santa Ana Volcano Hike in Parque Nacional Los Volcanes.

Although most people appreciate it through their car window and a stop at a mirador on the way to the hike for a picture another option is to drive down to one of the various restaurant offerings located on the shore and enjoy a lunch and drink post the hike. This is what our tour did after we completed the volcano hike. I cannot recall the restaurant we went to but it did provide a platform that allowed us to have a swim in the lakes waters, which were clean and not too cold.

You can also access it via public bus 220 or 242 but I’m not sure on the specifics of that.

There is also a ferry that provides 45 minute tourist boat rides in the afternoon at a cost of 5 USD.

Overall it complemented the Santa Ana volcano hike well and we enjoyed our afternoon there.

After hiking Volcan Santa Ana, we stopped at one of the many restaurants overlooking this beautiful lake to have a drink Even though it was cloudy and the weather obscured the mountains and volcanoes in the distance, it was still a spectacular sight. Would love to return in the dry season and get out on a boat on the lake

We stopped at a few spots overlooking the lake on our route to hike the Santa Ana volcano. There are a few different spots to pull over and see the lake. It is gorgeous from above! We did not go down to the shore, so cannot comment on this. I would recommend finding a few look out spots if you're headed to Santa Ana volcano.

This is a beautiful lake. We ate lunch here. I would recommend staying in this area either before or after hiking Santa Ana Volcano.

Came here at the end of a day tour and had lunch on the lake. Nothing can beat the view and the breeze when sitting in the shade looking out into this lake.

The lake is on an ancient volcano with lots of things to do. We used a hostel that had day use amenities so we were able to kayak and jet ski around this beautiful lake.

Beautiful lake surrounded by many restaurants. We took a tour boat ride around the lake and ended the day with chocobananos. Yum!

I went to Lago de Coatepeque with my girlfriend for an afternoon together. We drove to the lake and had lunch at a restaurant on the water. After that, we had beers at a waterfront hostel and swam in the pool. We were going to swim in the lake but we noticed a lot of seaweed in the area and we didn't want to take the risk (people have drowned before from getting stuck in the seaweed). It was a beautiful afternoon and we'll definitely visit again. Highly recommended!
