Visited on Saturday 28th April. Benmore Dam is the largest earth-fill (zoned embankment dam) water-retaining structure in New Zealand. On this visit we only got to see a little bit of this huge dam as it was raining heavy which stopped us from getting out...More

Benmore dam is a sight to behold, especially on a sunny day. Some really good photos to be had there. Great fishing spot for that elusive rainbow trout also. And a boaties paradise so it gets very busy in summer but well worth the drive...More

We were happy to find this place to visit on our stop in Otematata. The landscapes are amazing. The power station is impressive. A huge engineering work. You can drive across the dam wall and enjoy great views of the area.

We had no idea what to expect here but it is a fabulous feat of engineering at its best when one considers how remote the area is. Despite its bulk it fits into the landscape very well.

Other than the wonderful practical achievement of this power station, we were simply blown away by its surroundings and lake Benmore in particular - it's absolutely stunning. We spent a couple of hours around the station and the lake and enjoyed every minute of it.

Its everything an engineer wants to see...earth dam, exposed rock and one hell of a spillway! And for engineers this is a 4 star rating. For non engineers you may spend about 20-40 mins looking at the several viewing areas on the top and bottom...More
