Got recommended to go to Lake Tekapo on my journey from Queenstown to Christchurch. It's extremely quite here with not a lot to do. If you're planning on stopping over then 1 night is more than enough.

It is winter time in NZ so it will be cold, wet and windy. The bonus is you will see the mountains covered in snow. It's hard to say what weather you get on the day. I was there late April and it was dry and sunny on the day... More
It is winter time in NZ so it will be cold, wet and windy. The bonus is you will see the mountains covered in snow. It's hard to say what weather you get on the day. I was there late April and it was dry and sunny on the day and then the next three days were wet everywhere on the South Island.
