We ended up here by accident , having a drink on a terrace we saw some horses passing by but we did not have any clue what was going on. We just wanted to visit some towns close to our rental house and because we were attending some italian classes we did not explore the possibilities of what to see and do in the neighbourhood. We heard from other people that there was going to be a parade with horses in the center of town . And it was really beautiful to watch. During this 3 day festival the horses can be seen at several occasions , but there are also other things to do in the center, definately worth a visit .

This festival at the end of August celebrates Saint Oronzo, who is credited with saving Ostuni from the plague, in the process giving Ostuni its name of the La Citta Bianca; as he instructed the houses of plague victims to be whitewashed with lime to show they were clean. The parade lasts a good couple of hours with a stream of horses and riders all dressed in red sequinned costume. They are of course followed by the silver gilt statue of the man himself.... Stay in town for the music, dancing and eating !

If you are lucky enough to be in Ostuni the last few days of August then you must see the parade of horses which is to celebrate the local Saint Oronzo. Both horses and riders have been lovingly decorated in sequins and all "I am told" stitched by hand. The town around the Piazza is beautifully lit up like xmas and in the evenings the band stand comes alive with opera and live brass bands. Wonderful.
