First time here on a tour and we were taken here and told the story of the church and the history, nice to see.

This is a historic early gothic Catholic Church, dating all the way back to the year 1300... beautifully set in the cute town of Damme, not far from Bruges, an easy bicycle ride away

It’s very simple inside but feels like a church that still has a congregation. We spoke to the gentleman and lady inside, good to see someone in attendance.

Sadly we arrived too early on a Sunday morning and the tower was closed. We managed a walk around on ground level and went in to the cemetery. It seems to be the custom here to have photos on headstones which made the visit much more emotional for me. The grounds are well maintained and although we were unable to climb the tower it was still worth the visit. In the side garden is a 3 faced statue that is interesting. There are a few benches where you can sit and rest once you've made the climb. This is more suitable for adults than children. We may go again next year but will aim for an afternoon visit so we can attempt the climb.

In this ancient town just outside of Bruges this church is one of the highlights. Great bicycle routes will bring you to this jewell.

Getting to the top floor of the tower is a bit of an exercise, but you get rewarded by a great view of the surroundings. Don't forget to visit the city orchard beyond the cemetery where you can spot a stork family

While walking in and around Damme, we stopped at the church. The church itself is very impressive. A very old Gothic church, and what is special about it, is the amount of religious art in a relatively small church. Very very impressive. And then we met the wonderful great Roland, the tower keeper. I can highly recommend the climb to the top! Not for the faint at heart... 206 steps and some get very steep and small. But the reward is huge. The views from the top are stunning. Absolutely wonderful. And Mr Roland, he's as wonderful as his tower!

Apart from the architectural interest it is the best high level viewpoint in the area. It is also a very good cardio training! You will come away with the deepest respect for mediëval builders who did not have cranes!

The church consists of 3 parts, the tower, which one can climb for 2 euro to have great views over Damme, see all the way to Bruges and many smaller towns (seen mostly by their church) in Belgium and the Netherlands. Also easy to spot is the harbour of Zeebrugge. Note, as generally the case in climbing such towers, the stairs can be narrow, and not really recommended if you have a fear of heights. A 2nd part, attached to the tower is a ruined part of the church. Finally, one can enter the current parish church. This is quite a beautiful church, and if you look up in the nave (binoculars or a camera zoom do help!) there are 8 13th century figures of apostels. They survived the onslaught of the protestants, most likely because they were too high up to be demolished.
