We had a wonderful morning of walking here on a very bright frosty morning in November. The scenery was superb with the white distant hills and glistening water. There were hundreds of geese and other birds to appreciate. The area is very peaceful and there is so much space you can walk without feeling you are in crowds of others at this time of social distancing.

This nature reserve is one that my husband and I visit whenever we’re in Northumberland. It’s not that it’s the biggest or best but it does have a wonderful atmosphere for those who like bird-watching. Set near the Cheviots, it’s away from the crowds (if anywhere in this county ever really has crowds), has a car park which is never full, has a hide which is perched on the edge of a lake which attracts increasing numbers of all kinds of migratory and non-migratory birds and the surrounding countryside is home to all kinds of other living creatures, including snakes. If you want to see birds away from everything and have a peaceful walk around a lake in the countryside, it’s great. Don’t expect gift shops, information centres or anything else. Just make sure you have stout and waterproof footwear, along with your binoculars.

Such peace and quiet, apart from the honking of the geese. There are loads ofbirds to be seen (and photograph) from the good walks around the lakes. Be careful to keep your dog on a lead and watch out for adders; there were warning signs out (although we did not see any). There are no facilities in the reserve and I am not sure about car parking as we were staying on the adjacent caravan site. A great place to unwind (and watch the bird world go by; quite literally as they fly past).

Great walks and views whether your a birdwatcher or not. Easy parking and good paths around the lakes . Be careful if taking dogs to keep an eye out for the adders!
