About
The purpose of this museum of First World is to represent the war events and their human and social influences. After an introduction on the First World War, attention is focused on the events on the War front along the Isonzo: besides the weapons and arms there are also objects related to the daily life of the soldiers and a real life reconstruction of a trench. Then there is the documentation of the situation in Gorizia, a real "trenchtown" and the description of the 1917 and 1918 events, until the armistice between Italy and Austria on the 3rd of November. The First World War museum includes an area dedicated to General Armando Diaz, with an exhibition of documents, medals and other objects.

Visiting Gorizia for the first time and finding that the castle was closed (and had been for some considerable time it seems!), my friends and I walked back down the hill to this musuem and the Museum of Fashion next door.
The admission charge is very moderate €6 and yopu get an informative leaflet to guide you around. The exhibits are well displayed and lit, and although there are no English descriptions of the exhibits, the leaflet gives you a broad outline of what you are looking at.
There are unfiroms, weapons, an infantry bicycle for the troops to cycle into battle, posters, lots of photographs (some quite moving) and a reconstruction of a trench.

Located in the centre of Gorizia on a small hill (fyi, Gorizia means 'small hill') and reachable only by car or walking, this museum shows us a part of this town that is very difficult to know otherwise: WWI and its tragic consequences. Detailed information, great audio and visual effects, including photos, remaining artefacts and much more... It feels like as if you could have really been there. Take your time to explore this museum, it's worth your time and money, because WWI marked a big part of Gorizia's history.

We are both interested in the First World War which is why we made a day trip to Gorizia from Trieste to visit this museum - its a twenty five minute walk from the station. We were not disappointed - the displays looked to us as though they had been put together relatively recently as labelling and explanations were very thorough. The English Audio Guide was a real bonus especially as coming from England we knew relatively little about the war on the Italian front. We visited other First World War sites including an exhibition actually in Gorizia Castle and the Open Air Museum at Monfalcone. We only had limited time at this second venue where there are extensive remains of the trench systems.
Gorizia was also a lovely town with beautiful buildings, spacious parks and nice cafes.

We were lent an English language guide to the various rooms of the exhibition, but later discovered that the museum has produced an excellent guidebook - Guide to the Great War Museum: lest we forget, which is available for purchase at the entrance desk.
The exhibitions were very moving and gave a vivid indication of the horrors endured by those who fought in the First World War.

Few British people know much if anything about the Southern Front conflict in WW1 between Italian and Austrian troops. This wonderful museum captures the full horror of the fighting with photos, weapons and reconstructions of trench warfare. It includes an amazing collection of cartoons published at the time. There is also a small but interesting special exhibition about fashion in the 1920s. This is an absolute 'must see' if you are in the Friulli region, but it is certainly an emotional experience.

The quality of exhibits is superb. The "bunker" has been recreated with sound mimicking what the soldiers would have heard around them.

We visited Gorizia because it is mentioned in Hemingway's book, and we read it had a WWI Museum. The Museum of the Great War was superb. Sometimes these local museums are too much or too little, or too academic or too fascile. The Museum of the Great War is informative, entertaining, and a perfect stop for Hemingway readers.

A century ago the now quiet hills around Gorizia were battlefields .
The Museum of Big War (so was called before the distinction in WW1 and WW2) exhibit a lot of artifacts as well as a very nice audiovisual reconstruction of a trench.
The visit will let you consider how of sorrow and pain where companions of the soldiers, regardless which army the belonged to.
Book at least 1.5 - 2.0 hours for a visit that let you examine all the artifacts exhibited.

This great Museum can be found in the Castle of Gorizia sitting on a hilltop offering a good view of the surrounding landscape. We visited the exhibitions with family and friends, and all of us found it well organized and very informative. It was the best start for a visit of the Isonzo valley WWI memorial places. A memento of the sufferings and misery wars cause. We can appriaciate the peace we live in even better.

Very informative place, without the rhetoric which is sometimes found in similar places. The various aspects of a war (political, military and human) are well presented for both sides in the conflict.
