We went to Goriizia with our two kids and some friends. The Castello was closed because of renovation but the atmosphere and the scent of Italy felted in the air. The view of town Gorizia from the spot is outstanding. On the other side you can see Slovenian part of Gorica town. Beautiful place to visit. My truly recomendation.

Well worth the walk up the hill from the town of Gorizia, just for the view of the town and across the hills to Slovenia and to enjoy the medieval feel of the pentagon-shaped castle. The palatine chapel, Saint Bartholomew, houses canvases of the Venetian school of painting and traces of Renaissance frescoes. There is also a Museum of the Goritian Middle Ages. The Castle has a history stretching from an early mention in 1001, through the Hapsburgs and the Venitians, demolished in WW1, rebuilt in 1934-37, and the garden was used by the Nazis WW2 for the execution of prisoners. My uncle Louis (Luigi) was one of many men in the town who was executed in the Foibe Massacres, so it was poignant to look across the hills and wonder what the people of Gorizia lived through during the horrors of two world wars. For travellers with cars, there is ample car parking at the top of the hill and it's an easy walk around the Castle perimeter.

This castel gives a beautiful view of the city at 360 degree, it is rather small but very well restored and work keep progressing so soon there will be more to see and enjoy.

This would be a great place to visit if it were administered by people who knew something about tourism and communication. They have a dramatically sited, formidable castle. But they don't know how to explain it or present it.
About five percent of the signage is in English, and we should call it "English" because while most of the words can be found in an English dictionary, they seem to have been run directly from the Italian into "English" through Google Translate, and presented without any review by a native English speaker.
There's some good ideas in the castle: a nice arrangement of medieval and Renaissance musical instruments. There's an all-Italian program that sorta/kinda explains what's going on, but the music and the voice-over fight each other so that neither is distinct. And rather than spend a few euros for some external speakers that would reproduce the music with a little fidelity, the explanatory program relies on the internal speakers of a Samsung television. Some of the video looks to be about 10 frames/second and the editing is sloppy.
Someone put a lot of work into creating a miniature version of the castle in what appears to be a medieval-era siege. But there's no explanation of what's going on...not even in Italian.
There are several rooms with panels showing old photos of World War I. No translations. There's a room with some paintings depicting the martyrdom of a saint (Boniface? I forget); makes no sense and has little to do with the castle.
A castle this old in an area that has been contested for centuries by Italian, Germanic and Slavic peoples has a lot of history that should be explained in Italian, English, German and Slovene. Instead the proprietors seem to have filled the castle with whatever they could find. There's a lot of wasted potential here, and I hope some day the place will be managed by professionals.

Nice views of both italian and slovenian sides, beautiful Castle from outside and if you pay only 3 euros you will be able to see the inside, which is even better! Original furnitures, kitchen and saloons of a very ancient castle, plus interesting information about the history of the place. It's totally a MUST even if you are not in the area. Nearby there's the comunale museum, with a great exposition of the 1st World War (which took place just there) among others things. GO to Gorizia and go there.

To visit at least once if you are in Gorizia. Great view of the entire city, especially during the evening. The interior is small but it is a very lovely castle, with courtyards and characterized by a special history.

The castle offers a museum, but you can have a great view from the walls for free in the opening hours. It is a fantastic vista and you can better appreciate all the sites of WWI around Gorizia. You can see the town in front, the mass of Carso (Doberdo) on your left, the ossario in Oslavia amid the hills of Collio, the prime wine region of Friuli on your right.
Highly recommended.
There is a free car park near the castle.

Arrived by train in Gorizia at about 12.30 and found everything was closed including the tourist information which didn’t reopen until 2.30. The self help tourism booth at the railway station was hopeless. Be aware most shops close for 3 hours until 3.30. About 1.30 it started teeming with rain. We called into tourist office when it finally reopened and they told us we could go to the castle. We said we didn’t have a car. It was a hopeless expedition and we went back to udine without seeing anything. No taxis to be seen and not able to find buses in the rain. If the info office had been open when we arrived we probably would have made it at least somewhere. So the weather was the main culprit but Gorizia is not like other nearby towns such as Treviso. The main tourist attractions are a long way apart and opening hours are frustratingly uncoordinated. Get your act together Gorizia as other towns nearby are way better organised.
