Based on the Palace of Versailles but I preferred Herrenchiemsee. Beautiful fountains. Twenty minute journey across a lake. Fifteen minute walk from boat to castle but there are horse-drawn carriages to hire. Excellent guide who spoke loud enough for a large group to hear him.

We made a point of visiting many of Ludwig's castles while touring Bavaria with our granddaughter. The Schloss Herrenchiemsee was the most spectacular and truly the best touring experience compared to the overcrowded tourist masses at Hochenshwangau or Neuschwanstein. You must take a 20 minute...More

Easy drive from Munich. Lots of parking. Boat ride is wonderful especially in good weather. We packed a lunch and ate on a bench on the palace grounds. The palace is worth seeing and tours are well organized and informative. The fountain water was gross...More

We went while it was raining, I think is was especially quiet that day. You go by boat to the island. A tour of the palace is a must. The gardens surrounding it are not that impressive in comparison to the inside of the castle....More

This castle is surrounded by a park, woodland and the second largest body of water in Bavaria. Imagine building a tribute to Versailles here in the 1870s. It is not a copy of Versailles but an over the top version. Unlike Versailles, only the main...More

Herrenchiemsee is a day trip really. It is also a cash only trip- unless spending 50 euros or more. It is situated on island in lake Chiemsee and so a short boat trip is needed. The palace itself is quite spectacularly decorated inside although it...More

My cousin and I took the ferry from Prien across to the Palace. The crowds were almost non-existant that day as it was a Monday. We had a great tour guide who showed us through many rooms in King Ludwig II's duplication of Versailles. We...More

The castle is simply amazing! You can learn a bit more about the history of the King of Bavaria (Ludwig II). The details in each room are beautiful and precious. The visit was very worth it! The room of the mirrors is fantastic.

Sorry, not sure. We went in November and had no issues. The tours move at a very controlled pace and there is no "free range" opportunities. We've been to each of Ludwigs' castles and never had an inordinate wait time. Keep... More

I am sorry but I arrived by car and don’t know the answer. I do not recall seeing something obvious but, my suggestion , how about you call a local hotel and ask them?
