Yves Ollier, cheerful and sympathetic, offered us a fantastic experience in the bay of somme during more than 3 hours to discover the seals in this magnificent and changing place between low and high tide. Passionate about his job, he is a well of knowledge that he shares with passion throughout the trip in his 14-seater canoe. To be recommended

We enjoyed a three hour "excursion en pirogue" to see the seals in the bay of the Somme. It was the highlight of our summer holiday. Everything that we needed to be safe and comfortable was provided. Yves is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. He was kind and patient with our two children (aged 9 & 12).
We paddled out through the channel at low tide and enjoyed watching the colony of seals basking on the sandbanks. We ate lunch on a sandbank across the water from the seals before paddling back on the incoming tide. As the water came in, the seals entered the water and were swimming all around the boat. In the many years that I have been visiting the bay, this was the best view of the seals I've ever had. I wouldn't hesitate to book this excursion again.

We had a great time on Saturday with Yves from mabaiedesomme.fr. We were with my husband and our 8 years old son. All material is provided to make you warm, confortable and safe during the trip on the pirogue or canoe and what a magic moment to be so close from all those seals! We were able to be pretty close without disturbing them. Yves made great explainations and left us time enough to observe them properly. There is on top a lot of babies at the time being so was really a great experience. I can only warmly recommend.

The baie de somme is a beautiful area and a real haven for wildlife and this trip caught my eye as I love kayaking and thought it would be an ideal way to get closer to many of the species we had seen during the start of our stay. I speak a little french, so was able to book without a problem. We parked (free on Street in Rue Leonard) 5 minutes away from the base , which is a hut just off the boardwalk on the beach. For our trip they had appeared to have overbooked, so we opted to use 2 x 2 man sea kayaks and followed the twin hulled main boat around, although our guide, Yves, allowed us to go ahead and approach the seals first on occaisions. The main boat is a very stable and efficient craft which would be fine for absolute novice kayakers as Yves steered.

The trip itself was very good, a quick dash across from the beach towards the 'grassed' flats and we saw seals almost straight away, which allowed us to approach very close. The trip then goes along channels in the flats where we saw numerous seabirds including spoonbills and the boats are then beached for about 20 minutes and we sampled some wild samphire and other edible plants and our fellow passengers were kind enough to share some of their food with us (I advise taking your own picnic/drinks).

We saw seals very close as we relauched and then made our way back across the bay to the beach.

We had a great trip and Yves is a very friendly and funny guide, he speaks enough English to get by, especially if you know a bit of french too and made the trip very enjoyable.

A few things to help you if you are thinking of taking a trip:
Wear beach shorts, swimsuit bottoms - wetsuit leggings are provided if you want them, as are kayaking jackets, life jackets and waterproof tubs/bags. It can be very windy across the bay, so we packed their jackets in dry bags just in case and i took an SLR camera with me, kept it in the dry bag to stop it getting splashed and it was fine (as would phones etc.) You can leave other items secured in the hut. The trip lasted well over 2 hours and although not cheap, I thought it was value for money and the best way by far to see seals etc in the bay.
The tide in the bay is strong and very quick, so i would be very wary of attempting to go out unguided, we saw a motor boat get completely stranded on the flats during our trip and the crew had to be rescued and abandon their boat til the next tide.

I did not know before this trip just how beautiful the "Baie de Somme" is. It is true, we were very lucky with the weather, three straight days of sunshine, warm not hot. One could be tempted to think that under these circumstances each and every activity would just be fun. Maybe.

But the pirogue tour with Yves was the absolute highlight of our stay, definitely much more than just fun. It was perfect from the beginning to the end. Yves managed to make all of us (four girls from 10 to 14 and a dad) feel at ease, learn and enjoy. We would definitely again do a tour with Yves. Highly recommended!
