Unique monastery
Dec 2018 • Family
I've been to many monasteries in Spain. This was not the best or biggest but most unique because of the additional royal tombs inside the church area. The tombs are built near a natural cave which offers a sense of mystical aura. Also the Madonna and child inside the cave is very mysterious to experience. Like a grotto with it's own unique story. It is very well renovated with ongoing construction. Well worth a detour if in the Rioja area.

Some of the downsides, parking is very limited with narrow streets. Visiting times are limited. The staff seemed very busy and uninterested in visitors. It took me about 10 minutes to get a ticket and information pamphlet self guided tour (I was the only visitor at the entrance). Just an unfriendly reception during Christmas time. At other Rioja sites the staff are much more friendlier.

I am surprised this is not a World Heritage Site!!! The place is simply stunning. The history, the architecture, the setting - all worth preserving and publicising.

A must see in Najera

Very modest entry fee €4 but worth every cent. The tombs are fascinating and the opulent altar pieces contrast with the quiet cloisters.

The Monastery de Santa Maria is really worth the visit. The inside is very beautiful as well as the church nearby.

An absolute must do!

The monastery provides a guide and n English, so it’s easy to understand what is displayed. The whole place is such a beautiful and lovely place so it’s something that should not be left out when visiting the Rioja area.

A highlight of my trip (and I saw dozens of religious buildings).

The extent of the architecture, the artwork, the pantheon and the cave where the Virgin is are well worth the visit. You could spend more time but an hour should be enough.

Beautiful Archictecture

I really liked the building and the cloisters were very peaceful. I can appreciate that the church is beautiful inside, but I mostly find soooo much gold decoration way over the top. It was beautiful and definitely worth a visit.

Beautiful and Interesting visit

Building here was started in 1432. Well restored by Franciscans. It has a sumptuous altar. The legend is that a king, out hunting, found a cave with a carving of the Virgin Mary. The monastery was built to house the statue, and the church was built over the cave. You can visit the cave with the statue, and the entrance to the cave is guarded by the beautiful sepulchers of the king and queen.

We were in Nayera and we went and see the Francescano Monastero that cost only 4 euro. It is a wonderful building. You get the feeling to go back in time in another era.

The guidebooks say this place is historic and great--they are correct!

It had just stopped raining on a dreary sort of spring day, enough so that there was some sun to make the cloister a special place. This monastery is well-preserved and definitely worth the time to have a look. It is a find!
