Back to childhood

It's a very nice and special place, it shows you how the children live in the old days, you can find old toys, things, illustrative tools etc. for children who went to kindergarten while their parents worked.

History of the Hungarian kindergartens
Jul 2016 • Solo
Some 10 minutes walk from the train station, opposite to the entrance of the Brunszvik Palace there is a smaller, modern building complex with an old, eclectic facade. The complex houses the town's library and the Kindergarten Museum.

The museum is introducing the history of Hungarian kindergartens from the beginnings, the opening of the first Hungarian (and first Central-European) kindergarten in 1828 until the socialist day cares of the 1960's. Original toys, furnishing and clothing from the different periods of the development of kindergartens, a very interesting collection indeed. Sadly, not much is written about the displayed items even in Hungarian. A short English description is available at the reception, though.

There is an exhibition on the training of kindergarten teachers in the preparation phase, but can be visited, too.

In the old part of the building (the chapel of the old kindergarten) a small exhibition can be seen on the history of the family Brunszvik-Teleki-de Gérando, who played an important part in the history of Martonvásár and Hungary. The founder of the first Hungarian kindergarten was actually Therese Brunszvik, a great friend of Ludwig van Beethoven.

To sum up, it is a very interesting place, with ridiculously cheap entry tickets (440 HUF for an adult). Cash only.
Partly wheelchair-friendly (entrance and restroom yes, upper floor less).
