We put our seven month old into his baby-backpack and off we went. Parking is ample to for the bushwalk so long as you take the turn off to Aranui cave down the hill and don’t park at the top of the hill, otherwise it...More

We were told that this is the best short walk in New Zealand. We can't say whether this is true or not but it would take some beating. It's like walking through a grotto. Absolutely amazing!

We walked this trail just before sunset so that we could see the tunnels, etc. It was a pretty walk, but nothing spectacular. You should carry a torch, even during the day. We returned after dark to walk the short distance to the second bridge...More

Our wonderful lodgekeepers highly recommended we hike Ruakuri on our first (and only) night in Waitomo, but we were beat, it was dark, and I was still getting the hang of driving on the left. We missed what I gather is a spectacular display of...More

Totally worth your 1.5 hrs. You walk at a relaxed pace through the depths of the cave with a amiable guide. It becomes thrilling too when you walk through areas which used to be Maori burial grounds. There are places where you will see rafters...More

We did this walk today before going through the Ruakuri Caves. Was a lovely walk, few uphill bits but nothing too difficult. Was good to do before the cave visit as the some of the tunnels you see on the walk above, you see again...More

This free walk is beautiful during the day, but if you wait until after dark it becomes a lighting spectacle. We walked up after dark to the 2nd bridge and turned our flashlights off, and the night became alive with the beauty of hundreds of...More

This was the most amazing experience. Went well equiped with torches and arrived with perfect timing just as dusk turned to darkness. It requires a reasonable level of fitness with areas of climbing steps but the sight of all the glow worms was absolutely amazing.

Up and down hills or stairs - a very varied walk taking you through rainforest and limestone tunnels, along paths and boardwalks over rushing water. Only 30mins but well worth a visit. Very pretty, lush environment. Not suitable for wheels. Walk itself is free but...More

Very interesting walk - rivers, trees, ferns, caves, gloworms. Caves were cool and the river so powerful. Just before the first bridge is the point where some of the tours emerge and we were there as people came in and climbed out the river -...More

Yes, it took us 2.5 hours from near Auckland airport to the caves. This was in a motorhome and driving steadily.
