A good place to experience chocolate, Modica style
Sep 2019
We entered this shrine to the local chocolate and loved the experience, Plenty of samples and things to buy so you were able to appreciate this grainy chocolate for what it is. You find it off the main street down a short lane opposite the lower grand church. A good choice.

Amazing Chocolate Shop
Oct 2019
Make sure you visit this place and take a tour of their chocolate making. We put on paper gowns and hats and then entered the facility to help make the chocolate. Then you can taste all the varieties as much as you want. We bought over a dozen kinds and also the hot chocolate which was fantastic. These bars make great gifts, so make sure you buy enough.

The Most Amazing Chocolate
Jun 2019 • Couples
What chocolate could be better than Swiss chocolate? Bonajuto chocolate, period. We spent about a half an hour devouring chocolate pastries, washing it down with chocolate beer. My one regret is that I didn't bring enough back home. It is without a doubt, incredibly delicious. The mandarin, limon and vanilla are so fantastic. What a treat to have been at this chocolate heaven.

An absolute must to visit!

You can't visit Modica without calling in at Antica Dolceria Bonaiuto. This is one of the oldest chocolate factories in Italy (not just Sicily) and they still work according to traditional methods. We checked out the shop but we also bought a guided visit to the "Fattojo" (ancient name fo factory) where the first part (the most critical) of the process take place. We learnt about Cocoa beans and their processing. It was awesome, very professionally done and the tasting of the product through the various phases of the process was very interesting.

The best Cannoli in Sicily
Apr 2019 • Couples
This is probably the oldest chocolate store in Modica, if not in all Sicily. They have every possible flavour of chocolate and you can taste them all in the tasting corner - no questions asked. However, you simply must have a fresh Cannoli here - they are to die for. The chef, (a very shy man), fills them for you only once you've placed the order, and then you go to heaven!

Very informative and interesting

This was a very interesting tour and learned the process of cold processing of chocolate. The factory is the oldest chocolate producer in Sicily. The factory tour included tasting of many different chocolates and candies they made. The gift shop allowed you to taste about 30 different chocolates from 100% cocoa to50% cocoa. The factory is directly across the street from a baroque church dating back centuries well worth the visit

CHOCOLATE WITH MINIMUM INGREDIENTS
Apr 2018 • Couples
We did the chocolate tour at Antica Dolceria Bonajuto which was okay, however most of the information is online. We were given disposable smocks and hats for the tour, which took around 30 minutes, with a sampling at the end. The guide runs through the history as well as the ‘cold processing method’, which was used by Mesoamericans and brought back to Europe by the Spanish Conquistadores. We watched the beating of the cocoa bean and sugar, which were put into tins and shaken in a large tray, at the end the chocolate had a glossy finish. There are only a couple of ingredients in the chocolate, which has a grainy texture but is oh, so good. They also do a chocolate with one ingredient, 100% cocoa. We purchased 25 blocks of chocolate to bring back home as gifts, numerous people said it was the best chocolate they had tried. Would rate the tour 3/5 and chocolate 5/5.

When Francesco Bonajuto’s father died, he took over his fathers chocolate making business and opened Antica Dolceria Bonajuto in 1880, it is the same location today. The company is the oldest chocolatier in Sicily.

expensive but great

The oldest chocolate shop in Modica. Very friendly service, lovely interior, expensive but delicious dark chocolate (my favourite is the Grand Cru from Peru, followed by the one of Madagascar). Grab a cold chocolate drink to give you strength before running up the hill.

Must see
Jul 2018 • Couples
A beautiful artisan chocolate shop you must see. All the delicious chocolate is made by only 2 ingredients and without sugar and milk, so it will not melt! Don’t forget to see the picture of Loacatelli in the cabinet.

Chocolate heaven
Jan 2018 • Friends
Well worth a visit if you like chocolate. You can see behind the counter where they make their own chocolate in the unique Modica style. Samples of all flavours are there to try before you buy, and various other chocolate themed products are available.
