Most beautiful baroque church in Sicily
Aug 2020
Where do I begin? This is the most wonderful church in Sicily. Maybe it is because of its stark contrast with the simple houses, maybe it is because of the location or maybe it is the size, but it is simply amazing. Do not miss the line showing which zodiac sign it is currently.

One of the two main churches in Modica. The view from the top can be quite nice (ticket). Beautiful stairway.

Beautifully simple

Pay to go up to the dome - about 2 euro each. The views are worth it and gives you a good sense of the town.

The staircase is fantastic, the Church is beautiful, the art inside is fantastic. Make sure you allow some time to explore all the hidden corners! There is always something new to see!

Drop gorgeous facade
May 2019
Extraordinary Duomo, after we lost ourselves in the maze of passages and streets behind the Purgatorio. Its gobsmacking beautiful with its soaring tiered facade of golden stone which dominates the narrow central piazza. Its a wonderfully resilient statement of renewed faith in the destroyed town. Shame that they interior fails to wow or live up to the promise of the entrance front.

Beautiful Baroque building
Sep 2018 • Couples
Situated halfway between the upper and lower town, the impressive tower can be seen from large parts of the town. The cathedral which is dedicated to St George was built on the site of a 13th century church and the current building was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. The church is reached by an impressive flight of steps from the main road through the town - wear flat shoes for the climb. Inside is very ornate and you go up the tower for an extra charge of 2 euros. There is a silver ark which contains the earthly remains of the saint whose statue is on display in a side chapel - this is paraded through the town in great celebrations on St George's Day.On the floor in front of the altar is an elliptical sundial and also the geographical co-ordinates of the church. Obviously a very popular venue for weddings so it may be closed for a ceremony even though it is within opening times which are 9-1 and 3.30-7 - if you are staying in the town, your hotel may be able to advise.

Impressive church
Jun 2019 • Couples
The church sits high on a steep hillside in Ragusa approached by many steps. The baroque design, outside and in, is elegant The statue of San Giorgio on horseback is impressive. It is used as the centrepiece of a procession in a recent episode of Inspector Montalbano, as are the church and steps.

A baroque jewel!
Apr 2019 • Friends
This is one of my favourite places to walk to early in the morning. After climbing all the stairs, you will be rewarded with a stunning view of the city. The doors open at 8 a.m. The last weekend in April, is the feast of San Giorgio. There is a huge procession from this church with fireworks. A real sight to behold.
