This is my 2nd time in Dumaguete, and when we visit visited the place we didn't get the chance to enter the premise. This time we wanted to visit the library and museum! The facade is very beautiful and the entire university is super clean. The students are also nice and friendly.

After having to come to know the top people and a few deans and department heads at this school, in discussions and otherwise came to know that this place doesn't offer very good education in anything, although for filipino standards is average. But on a global scale, well, best to skip it unless one comes from a country where education is even more dicey.
Not sure what to say, but the name of Silliman exceeds reality.

The university is free to get in and walk around, it is quite big as there are many different buildings and a big library and football field and it has a lot of history behind it from WW2 up to today's day

Went to Silliman and hoped to inquire about college but then they were closed because it was Sunday. However, we just strolled the campus and took a picture in the opening because we weren't allowed to go inside. In the church and field part, they had this mass and we were allowed to go inside by an approachable security. Such a nice University. Hoped to be back in the future.

The Silliman University was the first on my Dumaguete to-go list as it was at the city center. It delivered the promise of a relaxing stroll after a long day of work. It was a pleasure to stroll inside, with the University's spacious and clean campus. We headed right away to the iconic building which was beautifully preserved and maintained. This building is a gem!
It was nice to discover that Silliman is named after its philanthropist, Dr. Horace Silliman, and that it was built even earlier than the University of the Philippines.

Established in 1901 as a school for boys. It started with 15 boys and has since grown into a university with 9,000 students from around the world. It boasts of a 21-hectare campus dotted with around 300 acacia trees and a number of gardens. It also houses several historical landmarks like the Silliman Hall built in 1903; Guy Hall built in 1916, which was used as an enemy garrison of the Japanese Kempeitai during WWII; Channon Hall built in the 1920s also used as a torture chamber during the war, among other notable landmarks.
The university, aside from being historical, is also known internationally for its high educational standards. It is the first American university in Asia and the first Protestant Christian university in the Philippines. Silliman today boasts of its Teaching Education, Information technology, and Nursing programs, which have been recognized as Centers of Excellence by the Commission on Higher Education; and its Biology, Marine Science, and Medical Technology, recognized as Centers of Development by the same body.
Silliman University is a must-visit place when you come to the City of Gentle People.

The university campus is big and very green! It is nice to walk along its streets and grounds with the shade of those big old trees. The architecture of the buildings is also lovely.

Silliman University is another institute of learning located in the Visayan region of the Philippines. Much like the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, which is the oldest university in Asia, Silliman University is the oldest American academic school in the country that was established in 1901 by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions. The American missionaries named it after Dr Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a known philanthropist from New York. The campus is not only full of hardworking students but also filled by rich greenery and trees with a beautiful view of the sea.

Coming here takes you back in time. It has a culture of its own. American influence in our Philippine culture is very much present. It is very impressive how they managed to keep the old buildings in good condition. The people in the campus are very friendly. When you wave, smile and say hello they would gladly smile and wave back even if you're strangers. Amazing!!!

If you are early in Dumaguete and is either waiting for an early flight or came from an early flight, visiting the museum at Siliman is a great activity. It is not a waste of time because the items will keep you curious.

Quick question; Do we need to have guides with us to enter the university? Or we just have to pay the entrance fee?
Written October 5, 2017
It depends on what you want to do. We just went for the museum, and it didn’t require us to have a guide.
